Seattle SERVPRO Water Damage Repair Extracts Moisture and Dries Spaces

Seattle homeowners might be surprised to know that they can lose as much as 14% of the water delivered to their properties from leakage alone. On top of that, water damage repairs for plumbing or supply line leaks need to account for the possibility of stains, mold, and structural damage.

SERVPRO teams specializing in Seattle water damage repair can return a Seattle bathroom to a pre-damage state with EPA-registered biocides and commercial-grade extraction and drying tools. This mitigation service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to salvage structures and contents.

Water Damage Repair for Bathroom Sheetrock and Floor Tiles

Water damage cleanup for a Seattle bathroom with damaged wall cavities and tile flooring can include the following:

  • Pipe leaks and other water damage affecting wall cavities and baseboards can be extracted with portable units that feature vacuum, pump, and heating systems to pull water out of porous surfaces like drywall
  • Unsalvageable, crumbling drywall can be cut out, replaced, and repainted after cleanup
  • Bathroom tile grout can be cleaned with proprietary SERVPRO antimicrobial solutions. If water damage has penetrated the grout, techs can focus on drying the subflooring below with air movers and dehumidifiers.

Seattle SERVPRO Techs Perform Emergency-Response Flood Water Removal

Flood damage affects homeowners all across the United States regardless of FEMA flood map designation. However, irrespective of whether Seattle property owners can enact flood prevention measures to minimize damage, floodwaters pose sanitation concerns that make cleanup with consumer-grade solutions inadvisable.

SERVPRO technicians respond 24/7 to flood water removal calls for Seattle residences. Regardless of the scale of the damages, SERVPRO coordinates with homeowners and insurance adjusters to perform thorough and efficient cleanup and restoration after a home flood.

SERVPRO Flood Cleanup and Rebuilding Services

SERVPRO technicians take several factors into account when removing flood water from a Seattle property, such as:

  • Waste cleanup, pest removal, and microbial remediation with EPA-registered biocides
  • Structural drying with centrifugal air movers and industrial-grade dehumidifiers
  • Contents of the property can be moved off site to an approved SERVPRO warehouse for repair and restoration while technicians work on mitigating flood damage to the structure
  • Techs can implement new drywall after cutting out unsalvageable sections with flood cuts above the waterline

Flooding can render some porous items, like carpeting, a loss due to the high potential for contamination, making it more cost-effective to replace than repair. For basement flooding, technicians take steps to minimize the risk of damage to walls or the foundation of your home.

Homeowners in need of disaster mitigation can call SERVPRO of Seattle Northeast at (206) 362-9295.

  • SERVPRO containment measures and personal protective equipment (PPE) minimize the risk of mold spores spreading around the property during cleanup
  • Odor Control Technicians (OCTs) address mold damage odors with various solutions, including SERVPRO proprietary deodorizers, EPA-registered biocides, and commercial-grade air movement devices.

Closed vs. Open Systems for Seattle Flooding Restoration

5/26/2021 (Permalink)

flood damage room with floating furniture. Flood and storm damage restoration is a specialty of ours. SERVPRO uses the latest technology and equipment for any size disaster.

How SERVPRO changes the strategy for Seattle flooding restoration under different conditions

As part of our strategy to dry out a flooded building as fast as possible, we have two different configurations: open and closed drying systems. Deciding between these systems requires precise measurements and learned expertise.

Most of our Seattle flooding restoration work gets done in a closed system. Under closed parameters, the doors and windows of your homestay closed, and the affected part of the building becomes sealed off for a time. In a small area, such as a bathroom flooded by burst pipes, SERVPRO technicians may hang plastic sheeting to create a “drying chamber.” Doing this helps us stop humidity and damage from spreading elsewhere in the home. Closed systems are commonly used in:

  • Basement Flooding Cleanup
  • Isolated Water Removal Services
  • Flood damages that occur during colder and more humid parts of the year

When conditions are right, SERVPRO IICRC certified technicians may prefer to use an open system, meaning that we open the windows and doors of the home to facilitate air drying. When the outside air is warm and less humid than indoor conditions, the open system can help speed up our flood restoration services. However, we need to be careful when using this method since a sudden change in outdoor humidity could slow the drying process.

SERVPRO of Seattle Northeast uses the best tools and training to help local homeowners overcome flood damage. Call us 24/7 at (206) 362-9295.

With Hundreds of Historic Sites in Seattle, a Fire Loss Can be Devastating to These Structures.

There are many homes and buildings that still stand in Seattle that have been around since before the turn of the 20th century. The heritage and history of the Pacific Northwest are captured in these buildings and structures. These landmarks continue to be windows into the evolution of construction styles and architectural development.

Preserving the History of Seattle's Landmarks

While there are hundreds of structures in the city limits alone, narrowing the historic properties and landmarks by significance is impossible. Instead, many architectural students and enthusiasts can appreciate the importance of specific structures that have been standing since the early 1900s and featured the first examples of particular building materials.

  • Alaska Trade Building – This construction was one of the first of its kind for Seattle, as it was marketed as being completely fireproof. Built in 1909, the building was a combination of steel, concrete, and brick.
  • Ward House – This is believed to be one of the oldest standing homes in Seattle and its surrounding areas constructed in 1882. This Victorian Gothic design maintains elegance in the community where it stands. It was added to the registry of historic places in 1972.
  • Moore Theatre – This venue of the arts is the oldest active theater in Seattle. This venue opened in 1907 and continues to be a location for live theatrical productions, lectures, and various concerts. Architectural buffs can appreciate the steel girder supporting the weight of the balcony without a need for columns.
  • Paramount Theatre – This is another aging theater in the city that has been in operation since 1928. In 1974 it was considered to be a landmark. It was one of the original structures in the city for film and vaudeville productions, though currently, it shows a much greater variety of media.
  • Holyoke Building – With a substantial fire that would devastate Seattle in 1889, this structure being in the early construction phases at this time would allow it to be one of the first buildings open for occupancy after this terrible city-wide fire in 1890. This is a 5-story brick building that is accentuated with stone trim.

Storms in Seattle Commonly Lead to Water Intrusion. SERVPRO Water Removal Services Can Help Reduce Losses

Seattle is one of the largest cities on the West Coast of the United States, with 3.98 million residents calling it home. During the Klondike Gold Rush era, the region gained prominence as a stopover point for fortune seekers coming to and from Alaska. The waterfront city borders the Puget Sound, which made it a famous trading outpost for several centuries. The constant influx of miners, factory workers, and tradespeople have also led to Seattle's rich cultural diversity with many Asian neighborhoods and districts. While initially a shipping gateway, Seattle has reinvented itself in recent years as a global technological hub with giants like Microsoft and Amazon being founded by Seattle-born Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos, respectively.

The region's cultural melting pot has also created a diverse range of music that gained global appeal. Among famous artists from Seattle are Ray Charles, Jimi Hendrix, Quincy Jones, and Nirvana. Most of the sought after destinations in Seattle are closely related to its rich cultural heritage. Whether that is at Pike Place Market, where the unique practice of fish throwing brings in thousands of visitors each day, or at International China Town just off the Pioneer Square, home of companies like Starbucks and T-mobile, Seattle is a constantly evolving city. In 2013, it was listed as one of the fastest-growing cities in the United States.

  • T-mobile Park is an enormous Major League Baseball arena on First Avenue, the local team's home, the Seattle Mariners. The stadium hosts 47,929 people on game days that provide a fantastic live atmosphere.
  • Pike Place Market attracts thousands of visitors a day, with many historical tours available. Much of the seafood makes its way into Seattle's thriving restaurant culture. Pike Place is also renowned for its unique tradition of 'fish throwing.'
  • The Boeing Museum covers the history of Boeing Aircraft, which was based in Seattle. Highlights include the moon buggy and other military aircraft. Regular tours of the Boeing museum are taken by visitors to Seattle each year.

Getting rid of excess water can be complicated by the solid waste in the water intrusion, power outages, or accessibility issues. SERVPRO technicians can restore your home and use industrial powered pumping equipment to remove large bodies of water before it causes excessive damage.

  • Truck-mounted and portable extraction equipment can be deployed quickly.
  • Submersible electric pumps can transport hundreds of gallons out of the premises.
  • Portable generators can be brought onsite in the case of a power outage.

Reduce the risk of permanent damage to your business. Contact SERVPRO of Seattle Northeast for commercial water removal at (206) 362-9295.

SERVPRO Can Get Rid of Mold in Seattle Homes Fast and Efficiently

Situated between Puget Sound and Lake Washington, Seattle is a seaport city with over 4 million people living in the metropolitan area alone. Close to the Canadian border, it is a major port for trade with Asia.

Europeans Arrive & a City is Born

The Denny Party arrived in Seattle on November 13, 1851. At that time, Native Americans were living in the area and had lived there for at least 4,000 years. The settlers, led by Arthur A. Denny, had traveled via the schooner Exact. They moved from their original destination to Elliott Bay. In 1852, the city was named Seattle to honor Chief Si’ahl.

People of the Inside

Two different tribes inhabited the Seattle area, the Duwamish and Suquamish tribes. The Duwamish are estimated to have lived in Seattle since approximately 8,000 BCE. They are a Lushootseed speaking tribe. Before they interacted with Europeans, they descended from two different people groups:

  •   The People of the Inside (the environs of Elliott Bay)
  •   The People of the Large (Lake Washington)

There are many tribes, even today, that are interrelated and interconnected with nearby tribes throughout the Puget Sound-Strait of Georgia basin.

Before the White Settlers Came

There have been sites discovered at West Point, which is part of Discovery Park, that are at least 4,000 years old. The Industrial District of Seattle was once the location of the mouth of the Duwamish River and villages. The People of the Inside lived near the following waters:

  •   Elliott Bay
  •   Duwamish River
  •   Black River
  •   Cedar River

Several prominent villages, of the thirteen throughout Seattle, were in this region. Other groups were the People of the Large Lake and the People of the Small Lake and were culturally similar. They did consider themselves to be a distinct people from the People of the Inside. Today they are all part of the Duwamish tribe.

Suquamish Tribe

The Suquamish tribe is also a Lushootseed speaking people. They are a federally recognized tribe as part of the Treaty of Point Elliott agreement, which was put in place in 1855. Chief Seattle signed the treaty on behalf of the Suquamish and Duwamish. The Port Madison Indian Reservation is owned by the Suquamish.

In 1792 George Vancouver decided to explore Puget Sound. This was when he met the Suquamish people. It was their first contact with Europeans. It is believed he may have met Kitsap, thought to be one of the most powerful chiefs from 1790 through 1845. More contact with whites would take place as the British established trading posts.

The Treaty of Point Elliott

In 1855, the Native American tribes of the great Puget Sound and the United States Government enacted a lands settlement treaty. It was one of thirteen such treaties in Washington state. Signed on January 13 at Point Elliott, it was ratified in 1859. The treaty did not stop the fighting that was going on in the area. The Treaty of Point Elliott established the Tulalip, Swin-a-mish, and Lummi reservations. Chief Seattle (Si’ahl) was the chief of both the Duwamish and Suquamish tribes and signed the treaty. Other signers included:

  •   Territorial Governor Isaac Stevens
  •   Chief Patkanim – Snoqualmoo and Sno-ho-mish tribes
  •   Chief Chow-its-hoot – Lummi tribe
  •   Chief Goliah – Skagit tribe

Oher tribal representatives signed the treaty as well. The treaty was supposed to guarantee fishing rights and reservations, but not all tribes were granted reservations. Part of the problem was the Indians believed the treaties would take place immediately upon the signing, not realizing that is not always how the wheels of the white man’s government turned.

Industry Comes to Seattle

Logging was the first major industry. The term Skid Row comes from the lumber boom. Today’s Yesler Way was once known as “Skid Road” after an incident involving lumber skidding down the hill from a nearby sawmill. The term later morphed into Skid Row as a result of the dereliction in the area. By the 19th century, Seattle had moved into bigger things. It became a commercial and shipbuilding center. During the Klondike Gold Rush, Seattle’s second major boom, it was the gateway to Alaska.

The Gold Rush Turns Seattle Into a Transportation Center

The Klondike Gold Rush was a blessing to all of the United States as it ended the depression. Seattle quickly became a transportation center. The miners headed to Alaska, and the Yukon used Seattle as a supply point and for transportation. While that was lucrative for a while, the real moneymaker, in the long run, was the feeding and clothing of the miners. The city was competing with other cities in the exchange business for the miner's business and had to be competitive. The economic benefits from this boom would fund many new ventures in Seattle. Some of the major businesses to come out of it were:

  •   American Messenger Company – started by 19-year-old James A. Casey in 1907 with $100 he borrowed. It later became UPS.
  •   Nordstrom and Eddie Bauer

SERVPRO of Seattle North East Use Tried and Tested Methods for Effective Home Restoration

Seattle is the largest metropolitan city in Washington State. Stretching up the West Coast, the city of nearly 4 million Americans is part of the Northwest Pacific Region. The seaport city is built on the Puget Sound, a 100-mile inlet of the Pacific Ocean. Seattle is well-known for its seafood markets like Pike Place, which sell thousands of fresh shellfish and seafood to visitors, residents, and restaurants. Seattle is also a diverse city with a thriving Asian community just off Pioneer Square and the home of various international tech giants and birthplace of musicians like Jimi Hendrix and Kurt Cobain.

A big part of Seattle's modern-day success is owed to the Klondike Gold Rush at the turn of the nineteenth century. As a seaport town Seattle, along with close neighbors Bremerton, Olympia, Everett, and others, became an essential stop-off point between mainland America and the Alaskan and Yukonian mining centers. As a major transportation center, the city became a hub for international food imports, cultures, and music. There is a lasting impact of Seattle's trade history that can be found by walking through the old docklands and into the Chinatown International District off Main Street.

  • Seattle's many green spaces include Discovery Park with its 532 acres of public lands, Lake Washington, and the nearby Cascade and the Olympic Mountains. Together these spaces open up many outdoor activities like skiing, kayaking, mountain biking, and trails.
  • Having a rich tradition of sporting excellence in the Pacific Northwest, the area boasts several professional teams. Local teams include the NFL Seattle Seahawks, MLB Seattle Mariners, and NHL Seattle Kraken, who play across a range of enormous stadiums and arenas. Century Link Field has a capacity of 69,000, while T-mobile Park can hold 47,574 spectators.
  • The diverse food outlets cater to all tastes, with each neighborhood presenting unique flavors and cultural cuisines. Hotspots for eating out include Queen Anne, Georgetown, and Fremont. The University District has a mouthwatering selection of Asian and Indian Cuisine.

Seattle's thriving business districts

Seattle owes much of its current innovation and status as a business hub to the Klondike gold rush. However, following that initial surge, numerous economies have thrived in the Northwest that goes beyond ports and trade. Aircraft are a big part of Seattle's post-war economy, with commercial airliner Boeing forging a strong business association with the West Coast city. Today, a short trip to Marginal Way allows visitors to view the Museum of Flight, a unique homage to America's rich history in both commercial airliners and spacecraft. Over 500,000 visitors make the trip to this museum each year as it houses one of the most significant collections of vintage air and space crafts. The exhibits mainly comprise restored Boeing commercial liners, vintage craft, and even a Concord Jet.

The reputation for technological and business innovation in Washington's largest city was cemented in the early 1960s with two huge events, the Century 21 Exposition and The 1962 World Fair. Two iconic buildings were constructed in honor of the event, which remains to this day. The Alweg Monorail, built by Alwac International as a connecting line between fifth Avenue and Pine Street, has since been expanded and renamed as the Seattle Center Monorail. Extensions to the original design allow travel to Seattle Center from the West Lake Center. The current monorail supports both Seattle residents and tourists who enjoy a unique vantage point of Seattle's downtown area.

The Space Needle observation tower is the second unique building to come out of the Century 21 Exposition and the 1962 World Fair. The enormous structure is 605 feet high and can withstand winds of over 200mph. At an elevation of 510 feet, the observation deck offers unrivaled Washington State views and the Cascade Mountains. Situated at the center of Broad Street, Edward E. Carlson and John Graham Junior initially designed the Space Needle. The building opens daily from 11 am to 6 pm and 11 am to 7 pm Thursday through Sunday. The upper observation decks have two unique restaurants, the Atmos Cafe and the Loupe Lounge, available every day, although it is recommended to book seats in advance. Broad Street itself is the home of many modern tech giants, including Amazon and Tableau, and a wealth of other tech startups. Seattle is one of the largest tech startup hubs in the US outside of Silicon Valley.

Leaking Bathrooms Can Cause Long-term or Permanent Damage to your Seattle Home.

SERVPRO of Seattle Northeast is available round the clock to help residents overcome potential water damage issues. Windy conditions can weaken the structural integrity of your home or roofing. As a result, these issues can lead to rainwater seeping through the building assembly and into your home. Unfortunately, water issues do not get better by themselves. It is vital to use a qualified restoration service from the local area to prevent the damages from increasing. SERVPRO can assess and identify the problem and begin a tailored plan of action to protect the property. Our team is experts at restoring contents, structure, and building assembly of residential properties. We are always available, and we promise to arrive within four hours of notification of loss.

  • We can deploy desiccant and refrigerant dehumidifiers in your home to increase drying times. The silica gel used in desiccant dehumidifiers can help draw water out of soggy or semi-porous materials to prevent permanent damage.
  • Our drying strategies are tailored to the architectural design and material build of each property we enter. A tailored approach sometimes requires special equipment like injectidry systems or immersion cleaning. We stock our trucks with the necessary equipment to get the job done.
  • Sometimes large amounts of water can enter a property suddenly. Our team has a collection of extraction equipment and submersible pumps to remove wastewater from your property. If there is a contamination issue, our technicians are trained in handling and disposing of biohazardous materials.

If your property suffers from water leaks this winter, contact SERVPRO of Seattle Northeast at (206) 362-9295.

Why Choose a Mold and Water Removal Company in Seattle that takes a Multi-Pronged Approach?

10/31/2020 (Permalink)

mold and water damage For disaster remediation, you can trust, call SERVPRO of Seattle Northeast at (206) 362-9295.

Seattle Residents Need Mold and Water Removal that takes Everything into Account

Seattle is a beautiful place to live. From the glorious vistas of Puget Sound and Lake Washington to a thriving music scene, it is an excellent part of the country to set up home. However, the climate does lend itself to a damp atmosphere and steady heavy rain, and so those living here need to take extra care of your homes.

If your home suffers a leak of any kind, whether from an appliance or due to inclement weather, you need mold and water removal in Seattle. For best results, choose a remediation company that takes a multi-pronged approach that leaves you stress-free and your home, “Like it never even happened.”

What do we mean by a multi-pronged approach?
Water and mold remediation are not straightforward tasks. There are many things to consider:

    •    What caused the problem?
    •    What is the best way to remediate it?
    •    Are there any health risks?
    •    What should you do about insurance?
    •    Can you prevent the problem from coming back?
SERVPRO of Seattle Northeast takes all of these aspects into account.

Why might you need mold and water removal?
Mold and water removal often go hand in hand. If your home suffers water damage due to bad weather or a plumbing issue, there is always a mold risk that goes with that. Mold thrives in damp environments, so as soon as water spills, there is a risk that the conditions will be just right for mold growth.

This works both ways – if you spot a mold problem in your home, there is always an underpinning moisture issue.
Whether your issue is water damage or mold damage, SERVPRO is on hand to tackle the situation and leave your home dry and fresh once more.

How do we decide on the best course of remediation?
Every remediation project is different. We begin by assessing:

    •    How much moisture is present – we use moisture probes and meters to take readings
    •    What caused the problem – if the cause is not immediately apparent, we can use our instruments to check for moisture in hidden places and trace the course of water across the surface of walls and floors
    •    Which water-damaged belongings we can salvage, and which we must dispose of

When we have completed our assessment, we will draw up a plan of action and explain it to you. SERVPRO technicians never act without your permission – we will detail the process and the cost before we start. Once you give us the nod, we begin remediation. This could include:
    •    Pumping out water
    •    Using air movers and dehumidifiers to dry the area
    •    Spot-cleaning mold or water damaged textiles and upholstery
    •    HEPA vacuuming and dry or wet cleaning to remove mold
    •    Applying anti-microbial treatments to kill mold and discourage regrowth

We can also send damaged items out for specialist cleaning at our facility if necessary.

How do we mitigate health risks?
Remediation is not without risk, which is why you should not attempt it yourself. Mold can cause health effects, and water might be contaminated with sewage or chemicals. Even water from a dishwasher can contain harmful chemicals.

SERVPRO equips all our technicians with high-quality personal protective equipment, including breathing apparatus, bodysuits, heavy-duty aprons, and gloves. We also train our staff in health and safety practices and ensure they carry out a full risk assessment at every job.

Can we help you with insurance?
Dealing with insurers may be one of the most frustrating parts of a home disaster. SERVPRO can assist with insurance claims on your behalf. We log all damage and take photos of evidence, and we can provide a professional opinion on which items we can salvage and which items you must replace. We are used to working with insurance companies, and we understand what they are looking for. However, the final decision on discarding contents rests with you and your carrier. We try to help and reduce the anxiety level, but we are not insurance agents.

Can we help prevent the problem from coming back?
If a faulty appliance caused the issue, we advise you to replace it, of course. If the problem lies in door or window leaks, a damaged roof, or a broken downspout, we suggest you repair it as soon as possible. In some cases, we can liaise with other professionals to carry out necessary structural repairs.

We always leave your home dry, with acceptable humidity levels to discourage mold from regrowing. We suggest keeping those levels constant – you might want to invest in a dehumidifier. We will do everything we can to help prevent problems from coming back; however, the best thing you can do is keep your home dry and deal with any leaks as soon as you notice them.

For disaster remediation, you can trust, call SERVPRO of Seattle Northeast at (206) 362-9295.

Should A Homeowner Worry About Electronics After A Fire Incident?

10/6/2020 (Permalink)

Electronics SERVPRO has the experienced technicians with the equipment and expertise your home and electronics need after a fire mishap. Call us today.

SERVPRO Helps Evaluate Electronic Items in Seattle Properties during Fire Damage Restoration to Establish Where Remedial Action is Necessary.

Most effects of a fire in a home are readily discernible since they involve physical soiling or deterioration of materials. However, some damages may go unnoticed unless you are keen. Damage to electronic components can fall into this category. SERVPRO takes care of such issues when restoring properties in Seattle.

Why would it be hard to confirm damage in electronics?

Once you embark on fire damage restoration after your Seattle property is affected, you quickly realize there are many factors at play. Such incidents usually cause damages in different ways, including:

  • Combustion of materials
  • Depositing of smoke residues

Moisture or chemical action from firefighting efforts

The effects of smoke deposits and moisture can be restricted within the interior of your electronic items even when the exterior looks okay. For instance, keeping your electronic items in an area with high levels of humidity can cause interior parts to rust as the humidity in the air supplies moisture through condensation. Our SERVPRO technicians help prevent this by:

  • Controlling the humidity levels through dehumidification
  • Moving items to a dry area within your property
  • Supplying heat to prevent condensation

What effects does smoke have on electronic appliances?

Restoration must factor in the hidden aspects of smoke damage. Apart from soiling the surfaces of the items, smoke also:

  • Leaves an insulating film inside the items
  • Deposits acidic soot residue all over the items
  • Leaves a magnetically charged residue

It is easy to disregard such issues as minor. However, when left unaddressed, they can cause permanent damage when you use the items later on. For instance, the insulating film causes unnecessary overheating. Magnetically charged residues can also cause short-circuits, while the acidic soot leads to gradual deterioration of internal components.

A proactive restoration approach can save you the high cost of repairing or replacing electronics.  Call SERVPRO of Seattle Northeast at (206) 362-9295 to help. We're Faster To Any Size Disaster.

Our Professional Technicians Can Provide Emergency Mitigation and Restore Your Seattle Restaurant to Pre-Loss Condition

Restaurants make their money by serving quality meals to customers. They cannot afford the downtime that puts their business on hold. Cooking fires accounted for approximately 30.6 % of non-residential fires in 2018, according to FEMA. When a kitchen fire breaks out, it can bring your business to a screeching halt. SERVPRO provides fast fire mitigation in Seattle to get you back in business as soon as possible.

What Does A Fire Restoration Company Do?
Between 2009 and 2018, cooking was the leading cause of non-residential fires. That is an increase of 33% from previous years. In 2018 the dollar loss nationally was $51,700,00 just from cooking fires alone. When a fire breaks out in any business, professional fire damage restoration services in Seattle are needed.  SERVPRO assists the business owner in putting their business and their lives back together. The restoration process includes:
    •    Assessing the damage
    •    Debris removal
    •    Soot, odor, and residual water mitigation

Our fire and smoke restoration technicians (FSRT) work with the proprietor to determine the best course of action for rebuilding the business. The goal is to clean every area of the restaurant and leave it, “Like it never even happened.”

Whenever a fire occurs, one of the main things the technicians focus on is the removal of the pungent smoke odors. Water extraction is another vital area that needs immediate mitigation. If firefighters were involved, water and chemicals used to put out the fire need removing. Secondary damage, such as mold, can occur if the water is not dealt with promptly.

Faster to Any Size Disaster
The key to all of this is a rapid intervention. SERVPRO’s fast response and action can help minimize damage and loss. You can expect our technicians to hit the ground running and provide the fire damage restoration needed for your situation. After a fire occurs on a commercial property, the crews deal with:
•    Smoke Odors – These odors can permeate the entire building. The smell gets in the walls, fixtures, furniture, and air. The debris from the fire, the soot, and even the chemicals used on the fire all contribute to the smoke odors. Removal of the debris and soot is the first step to lessening the lingering scent. Deodorization takes place later to remove the odors altogether.
•    Soot Removal – Many commercial fires end up with a thick layer of soot in the building. Often it is combined with moisture. Depending on the makeup of the residue, it can damage surface areas where it comes in contact. Immediate removal of the soot is paramount to prevent problems and can reduce the cost of replacement.
•    Residual Water – If moisture is not extracted and cleaned up right away, mold can develop. It takes as little as 24 hours for mold to grow, and it can spread rapidly through the structure. The musty odor from the mold combined with smoke smells can make the task of deodorizing even more difficult.

Understanding the need to work quickly, our teams get busy mitigating smoke odors, soot, and water damage. Some steps need to be taken before restoration can begin and prevent the damage from worsening. These include:
    •    Water extraction and chemical clean up from extinguishing efforts.
    •    Removal of charred and damaged debris.
    •    Drying of wet areas using air movers and dehumidifiers.
    •    Evaluating the types of soot and surface areas to match the correct cleaning products and techniques.
    •    Soot removal using industrial vacuums, agitative methods, soda blasting, and other appropriate methods.
    •    Cleaning and disinfecting impacted areas.
    •    Removal of content for cleaning to a non-affected area of the building or our warehouses.

How Does SERVPRO Deodorize After a Fire?
Smoke can travel rapidly through a building and spread foul odors into areas not touched by the fire. Removal of these malodorous smells is an essential part of fire restoration. Our team uses a variety of methods to deodorize the restaurant, including:
•    Thermal Foggers – This is a dry fogging method that sprays a deodorizing fog. A heater vaporizes a unique deodorant solution to create the fog.
•    ULV Fogger – This is a wet fogging method that uses low-pressure air streams to disperse small droplets throughout the building.
•    Ozone Generator – This process oxidizes the odor through the ozone produced by the equipment.

Specific safety precautions get followed when fogging and ozone methods are enacted. SERVPRO technicians are equipped with the proper PPE to handle the situation. To ensure everything is safe, people, pets, and plants must be removed from the facility before deodorization takes place.  The proper ventilation time must be allowed before re-entering the building.

During the restoration phase, structural elements and contents are repaired, restored, or replaced. Tables, booths, and fixtures not directly impacted by the fire can often be restored to preloss conditions. They may also be salvageable if the damage is minimal. Non-porous materials such as glass dishes and metal serving ware can be cleaned. Our team knows what can get salvaged and what needs replacing. SERVPRO has one goal – to have you serving delicious meals to happy customers once more.

Do Wall Systems Become Irreparably Damaged After Flooding in Seattle?

9/3/2020 (Permalink)

lightning on night sky backgroud; trees in foreground Flooding is devastating to homeowners. SERVPRO knows how to dry your home.

The Exterior Wall System Separating the Inside of Your Home From the Elements can Often be the First Damaged Materials When Flooding Occurs

Flooding can be one of the most calamitous natural forces against Seattle homes and businesses, especially when they come amid already damaging severe weather. Rising waters pressing against the outside of your house can exploit vulnerabilities in your home's exterior to allow for flooding to reach inside.

Flood damage to Seattle homes is often a gradual process, and for many structures, it can begin with the migration of water through the wall system. Each of the individual components of this unit can become individually compromised. It requires our in-house contractors to repair and replace these elements or our flood restoration technicians to dry them thoroughly, depending on their severity.

  • Siding/Veneer – Veneer material like masonry or siding can be the first affected by exposure to flooding. While brick can get cleaned and repointed, broken or compromised, siding requires replacement.
  • Plywood – Beyond the siding or veneer is the backing plywood material. OSB and plywood are both porous and can absorb moisture quickly.
  • Insulation – Insulation is highly porous and permeable as well. Exposure of these materials often requires replacement as it is often cheaper than attempting to dry and restore it.
  • Framing - Framing is often one of the last materials to show direct damage from flood exposure, often allowing it to be cleaned and dried instead of removed.
  • Drywall – Gypsum sheetrock is among the most porous and permeable of all exposed elements in a wall system. These materials must often get replaced if not immediately dried after exposure.

When Can These Removed Materials Get Replaced?

After restoration, our technicians can work seamlessly on the repairs and reconstruction that the property needs. This process includes the replacement of removed exterior wall system components.

Should I Consider The Level of Customer Care A Company Offers When Choosing A Fire Damage Restorer?

8/28/2020 (Permalink)

Roof on fire SERVPRO will take care of your Seattle fire, prepare and call us today.

At SERVPRO Customer Service Is Considered As Crucial As Any Other Aspects of The Fire Damage Restoration Process In Seattle Properties.

Fire damage manifests physically and therefore requires physical solutions. However, when choosing a restorer to fix your Seattle home, you might need to consider factors beyond the company's ability to perform various restoration tasks. Customer service is one such aspect since it can change some aspects of the restoration.

How does customer service impact the renovation?

Fire damage restoration in Seattle properties is rarely a concise or static process. Since the incident may be the first one you have ever dealt with, you have to learn fast and also act quickly because the conditions change if considerable time passes with no remedial action. Professional restorers, on the other hand, readily understand the damages they encounter in various properties. SERVPRO emphasizes better customer care since it is what acts as a bridge between what the professionals know and what the property owner wants. The main advantages of better customer care include:

  • Eliminating uncertainties about the outcomes of the restoration process
  • Reducing stress by availing different possible solutions to the problems
  • Simplifying the administrative aspects of the restoration

What uncertainties do most homeowners face after fire damage?

Fire involves a wide range of chemical processes that affect materials in many ways, all over the property. For instance, smoke blackens surfaces through soot deposits or causes yellowing on appliance surfaces when acidic residues react with the material. While most homeowners expect cleaning to help restore blackened surfaces, there is uncertainty whether unusual damages such as yellowing, stained grout on tiled surfaces, or stubborn odors can be resolved.

Our SERVPRO customer care representatives take time to explain the different effects fire has on your property and the possible solutions. For instance, we can provide a timeline of when certain damages happen, and the possible solutions or preferable restoration approaches to counter those outcomes. For an incident that leaves considerable smoke deposits, a typical timeline of expected losses would follow this trend:

  • Smoke discolors porous materials permanently within minutes.
  • Soot causes yellowing in appliances, tiles, and countertops after hours of exposure.
  • Painted surfaces yellow, metals corrode, and upholstery stains permanently after days of exposure.
  • Weeks of soot exposure stains synthetic fibers permanently and pitting, or etching occurs on glass surfaces.

What is the most stressful thing about fire damage?

It is hard to pinpoint one aspect as the most stressful thing since fire incidents affect properties and their owners differently. Some top concerns include:

  • Ruined schedules
  • Loss of sentimental items
  • Lengthy restoration procedures

There is no convenient time for fire damage. However, the situation is worse when an incident interrupts other plans such as a vacation or when the loss falls in the middle of a severe weather season. Such loss normally leads to the cancellation of the rest of the plans so that you can focus on the restoration. However, if you find a remodeling team that can take care of your interests well, the disruption can be minimized, allowing you to proceed with some, if not all, aspects of your life as usual.

One way our SERVPRO teams manage to satisfy the needs of customers is by segmenting the work and assigning different responsibilities to specific individuals. For instance, our Fire And Smoke Restoration Technicians handle smoke-related damage, Applied Structural Drying Technicians handle moisture issues, and our Carpet Cleaning Technicians manage the restoration of upholstery and other fabric items. We also have crew chiefs who oversee the entire teams, ensuring the flow of instructions, questions, and feedback through a single channel.

What administrative issues do I have to deal with after fire damages?

Administrative processes might involve filing paperwork, seeking approvals, or sending notifications. The most common tasks in this category are the filing of insurance claims and seeking approvals for renovation processes from local authorities. Our SERVPRO crew chiefs help ease the process for you by informing you about deadlines or the minimum requirements for each type of application. We also help you collect necessary information such as photos or videos of the damaged sections.

You need a professional restorer to do more than just cleaning and restoring the damaged sections of your property. With the right level of customer service, it is easier to recover from fire damage. Call SERVPRO of Seattle Northeast at (206) 362-9295 to help manage the renovation of your property. We're Faster To Any Size Disaster.

Why Do I Need Skilled Technicians to Restore My Seattle Water Damaged Drywall?

8/5/2020 (Permalink)

Water pockets on drywall. Water damage can take over your Seattle home faster than most realize, call SERVPRO today. We will help you through every step.

SERVPRO Has Proven Techniques and Experience Handling Seattle Area Water Restoration Needs

Whether a pipe bursts in your Seattle home and sends water into your finished basement, or you had a tub overflow, and water seeped behind walls, you need to address the saturated drywall. If you suspect that there is water damage within your home, it is imperative that you have it inspected by skilled technicians. SERVPRO is available 24/7 for water removal and drying so that you can lessen the overall loss.

Why Should I Call SERVPRO to Help?

Speed is critical when water infiltrates your home. Calling in our trained team for water restoration in Seattle helps to inhibit mold growth and lessens the financial impact of the loss. Once the Green Fleet arrives at your property, we will:

  • Inspect your drywall for moisture. If the drywall is soft, it is a good indication that it is wet. We also have non-penetrating meters that help us to determine if excessive moisture is present.
  • Take a look at the wall interior. We can do so by creating boreholes to find moisture around the studs or a penetrating moisture meter. It is imperative to determine if your insulation is wet so that we can begin proper drying protocols. This may include the removal of saturated portions of insulation to be replaced with new materials. Your insulation will lose R-value if it remains wet.

Saturated walls and wet insulation hold onto moisture for quite some time, which means that mold clusters can thrive. We will perform controlled demolition to remove any unsalvageable drywall and dispose of it as quickly and efficiently as possible. Everything is then replaced and finished off to bring your interior back to preloss condition.

Why call SERVPRO of Seattle Northeast for water restoration service? Because we have the manpower and technology to handle the project with precision! Call (206) 362-9295, and we can send out a crew as soon as possible.

Floodwater Infiltrated My Home with the Last Storm, How Can I Clean it Up?

7/28/2020 (Permalink)

Flooded living room Flooding quickly causes flood damage. Contact SERVPRO for water removal and remediation services.

Mitigate Loss in Your Seattle Home with the Help of SERVPRO Flood Damage Restoration.

Once storm floods send water into your Seattle home, this is an emergency that must get handled right away. Outside water intrusion filling the lower level of the house or your basement might be loaded with a broad range of contaminants. Rather than going the DIY route with products and cleaning tools you have on hand, skilled water restoration technicians (WRT) can safely and efficiently handle the project. Additionally, SERVPRO arrives and develops a course of action that eliminates lingering moisture, leading to potentially harmful mildew and mold growth.

Is There Anything I Can Do Until Your Crew Arrives?

A few actions that any homeowner can take on before our team at SERVPRO arrive to help with flood damage in Seattle from the recent storm includes:

  • Taking precautions by working to close off the flood loss zone from the rest of your interior
  • See if the power can be turned off to the area to limit potential electrocution dangers
  • Never touch the loss zone and always try to avoid coming into contact with the contaminated water.

What Happens When SERVPRO Arrives?

After our Green Fleet arrives on your property, the crew chief begins a thorough assessment of the flood loss, which often includes testing the water. Water testing is essential to determine the level of contamination within, such as bacteria or chemicals. This ensures that our team has a plan that includes necessary antimicrobial treatments if required.

Containment is another standard step with any flood event, as this allows our team to inhibit cross-contamination into other areas of the home while we are working on water extraction and drying. Airborne droplets often contain bacteria that can cause potential health effects. The SERVPRO crew takes necessary precautions, including the use of personal protection equipment (PPE). We also use air scrubbers, which is equipment that helps capture airborne contaminants to improve air quality during mitigation.

Why Can’t I Handle the Floodwater on My Own?

The flooding that happens from a storm will often contain a great deal of debris and a range of unknown contaminants. Non-porous items within the flood-loss zone come with the highest potential for salvageability and restoration. We may simply be able to clean with EPA-registered cleaning agents or use immersion cleaning techniques.

However, many porous items after a flood will call for removal and disposal. Mold may also start to multiply and grow in just under 24 hours of the time of the event, followed by rapid spreading. We are trained to spot and handle all potential hazards, which the regular homeowner cannot do. There are many issues that come from a flood loss event, such as:

  • The potential for the total loss of carpeting and carpet padding
  • Delamination of tile flooring within the flood zone
  • Sheetrock saturated with water that wicked upward, which calls for controlled demolition using flood cuts and followed by replacement
  • Hardwood flooring may need partial or a full replacement, depending on the success of various techniques

What About Odor Control?

When we are taking care of the water cleanup and drying of your Seattle home, we take cleaning and odor control very seriously. Flood loss events bring the potential for lingering odors when moisture is not appropriately addressed. Along with our advanced moisture detection tools, we use a range of deodorizing and specialized cleaning techniques to handle odorous particles. These advanced formulas, including potent antibacterial and antimicrobial agents, are excellent for disinfecting surface areas. Depending on the situation at hand, our crew may need to use more involved applications to eliminate robust odors.

For more robust, embedded odors, our team may use thermal fogging techniques:

  • Solvents get heated, creating a fine mist that covers areas damaged by water and odors
  • The fine mist comes into contact with and bonds with odor molecules to break up the odor chain, thus eliminating the pungent aroma

We also have hydroxyl generators that work with the help of ultraviolet rays, removing odor-causing airborne molecules. Even though these machines are powerful on tough odors, they are safe for use around your family and pets.

When you call on our SERVPRO team for help with flooding within the home, you can count on us for:

  • Safety first
  • Location of the source of water infiltration
  • Prompt inspection of the damage followed by careful project planning
  • Initial cleanup and water extraction
  • Drying and dehumidifying
  • Full restoration of the property
  • Meticulous cleaning and sanitizing of all surface areas

SERVPRO of Seattle Northeast is the team to call if you are dealing with flood damage after a storm. Big or small, we handle all water removal projects 24/7 with emergency service and fast response times. Call (206) 362-9295 to deploy a crew to your property!

Even a small amount of water can cause damages to your drywall, wooden flooring, and valued items if ignored for an extended period. Fortunately, when you contact SERVPRO professionals on time, we can stop the damages and restore your Seattle home to its pre-misfortune state in a brief period.

What are the signs of water damage?

Your ceilings and walls may look dry after an incident of water damage in your Seattle home. However, water and moisture may be behind the walls, and floors among other confined places. Our technicians can use infrared cameras and borescopes to determine if there is moisture in cavities or behind the walls. If moisture is present, a mold infestation can occur. Electronic equipment, artwork, paper files, and furniture may look and feel dry on the outside. However, the items may contain unwanted moisture that can cause irreversible damage.

How fast do you respond?

We are proud to say that we have a response team available 24/7, including on weekends and holidays. Our friendly customer care team consistently answers, and returns calls fast and efficiently. We respond to emergency calls fast to relieve our customer's devastation.

How do you conduct water removal?

Our certified technicians understand that effective water removal is the best way to restore a property. Therefore, we do everything possible to ensure an effective drying process. Our technicians can use different types of water extraction and drying equipment to remove the water, and moisture, including:

  • Light wands to extract water from glue-down carpets.
  • Vacuum squeegees to extract water from hardwood, concrete, laminate, and vinyl surfaces.
  • Centrifugal air movers to increase air circulation in the affected areas.
  • Dehumidifiers to eliminate water vapor from the air.

We can also drill small holes in the ceilings, under cabinets and walls, and use structural cavity drying equipment to direct airflow through the holes. Some systems consist of vents that we attach axial air movers to enhance the drying process. Structural cavity drying equipment replaces cold, moist air with warm, dry air, increasing the surfaces’ temperature, and lowering the vapor pressure. This increases the rate of evaporation, leading to faster drying.

Do not let water damage distort your routine. Contact SERVPRO of Seattle Northeast at (206) 362-9295 for fast and effective restoration.  We can make the water loss incident seem, "Like it never even happened."

Is It Possible to Restore My Seattle Home After A Fire?

7/7/2020 (Permalink)

A room with windows and a stairway with an active fire. Fire damage to your Seattle home? Call SERVPRO we can help.

Call SERVPRO to Quickly and Professionally Restore Your Seattle Home

Most residential fire damage is from soot residues. Smoke travels throughout the structure and, as the fire cools, slowly deposits the soot on every exposed surface. Cleaning the home requires multiple methods.

How Does SERVPRO Clean My Residence?

Seattle fire restoration begins with capturing and removing soot residues. Two of our primary methods at SERVPRO are Vacuuming and Dissolving.

  • Vacuuming removes solid, dry particles loosely attached or resting on surfaces. The speed and intensity of the vacuum are determined by the type of surface. Kitchen countertops can be cleaned with a low-speed, hand-held vacuum, while a deep-pile carpet requires a much larger device with an adjustable speed setting.
  • Dissolving is the preferred method for removing particles that have a tighter bond with the surface they cover. Specialists use one of our cleaning products to loosen and suspend the residue for easy removal. In most cases, this method is excellent for all surfaces unless the heat of the fire ‘baked’ the residues into a much harder layer than usual.

What Exactly is Involved with Dissolving Residues?

Dissolving residues takes three steps: Wash, Rinse, and Dry.

  • Wash – Specialists apply a cleaner and lightly agitate it into the surface for suspension and removal.
  • Rinse – Team members use another solution, water, or air to lift the suspended residues away from the surface and extract it for disposal.
  • Dry – This last step involves specialists using airflow and heat to remove any remaining trace amounts. Often, our teams can accomplish this by using your home’s HVAC system to increase the natural flow of air in your home.

What Else Can SERVPRO Do for My Home?

SERVPRO can also demolish and remove items physically damaged by the heat and flames. Each team has carpenters and other construction specialists that can rebuild your home from laying a new deck to installing new roof supports.

To schedule a visit by our specialists, call SERVPRO of Seattle Northeast at (206) 362-9295 today.

Is Extraction Something I Can Do Alone for My Seattle Home?

6/30/2020 (Permalink)

water spreading and flooding on living room parquet floor in a house Damage can lie just beneath the surface. Contact SERVPRO when facing flooding and flood damage in your home.

Our SERVPRO professionals have multiple water removal tools to suit many different conditions.

Many homeowners mistakenly believe that mitigation and other recovery actions in their Seattle properties are something that they could manage on their own. There are many steps to emergency services and early mitigation solutions, many of which require sophisticated equipment and technologies. As a reputable restoration team in the area, we have cutting-edge tools and devices to address nearly all of the loss effects that your property might experience.

Even an effort like water removal to address flood damage in Seattle homes is not something that should get left to inexperienced property owners. Our SERVPRO professionals I have dozens of extraction devices ranging from our wet vacuums and attachments to extractor trucks that roll in with our fleet of vehicles. Depending on the severity of the situation, we could use multiple water removal tools to prepare your home for the drying that it needs after a flood.

Why Is Extraction Important for Flood Recovery?

Understanding the role of extraction after a flood in Seattle is vital. Because standing water can be such a threat to exposed materials and contents throughout the property, the various tools and approaches used to remove this surface water must get deployed as soon as our technicians arrive. Regarding emergency services and mitigation tactics that we begin after job scoping, extraction is often at the top of this list. Many other restorative actions cannot take place if the removal of standing water has not occurred. The immediate benefits and advantages of implementing this mitigation strategy include:

  • Removing Surface Water - Surface water can be a hazard to the occupants of the house and even our responding technicians. Between slip hazards and the possibility of shock, any standing water in your home after a flood should get removed as soon as possible.
  • Reducing Saturation - Surface water can also be threatening to the materials it is exposed to while it migrates through the home. Some flooring materials and wall systems are more sensitive than others, such as the fibers of the carpeting and the porous composition of drywall.
  • Preventing the Migration of Water - Removing standing water cannot only protect the exposed materials and reduce potential hazards but also stops the spread of water loss conditions throughout the property.

What Are the Best Tools for Extraction?

There are many pieces of equipment in our arsenal that we use to address standing water and pooling in the house after a flood. The choice between these devices falls to the severity of the situation, the depth of the water, and the materials affected. Much of these decisions get made during the job scoping process that occurs before mitigation and many of the emergency services required to restore the home. Choosing among extraction tools available to our technicians is a vital way of reducing the ultimate time of restoration and its cost. Some of the popular options for removing water from the flooring in the flood-damaged home include:

  • Submersible Pumps
  • Wet Vacuums
  • Truck-Mount Pumps

Can Water Get Removed from Wet Carpeting?

There are many materials and flooring types that can become damaged by migrating water and saturation during a flood loss event. Carpeting is among the most sensitive of these materials because its top layer primarily consists of fabric and fibers. Even its secondary padding layer beneath is porous in nature, making it vulnerable to substantial saturation concerns. Our fast response to these emergencies where carpeted floors have become damp or entirely saturated by flooding waters involves multiple tools or approaches, including:

  • Weighted Extractors – Using the weight of the restoring technician on a plate or ride-on remote control unit, we can force the top layer and padding layer of carpeted floors against the subflooring to displace moisture. An onboard vacuum removes this moisture brought to the surface through pressing.
  • Carpet Wands – Wet vacuums and mobile extractors are both vital tools for restoring your home after a flood loss. Individual attachments can make this process much more efficient, such as carpet wands. These wands pull moisture from the padding and fiber layers of carpeted floors.
  • Controlled Demolition – Unfortunately, there are instances where contamination could be a concern or drying and extraction do not happen quickly enough to protect carpets. We have contractors that can remove portions of the flooring where damage has become too excessive to recover.

Flood loss can be an unexpected and hazardous presence in your home, but our SERVPRO of Seattle Northeast can offer fast extraction and drying solutions. Give us a call anytime you need us at (206) 362-9295.

What Can Cause Electrical Fires in My Seattle Master Bedroom?

6/19/2020 (Permalink)

An electrical socket with soot damage. When it comes to your electrical fire damage, call SERVPRO for assistance today.

IICRC-Certified Professionals Mitigate Fire Damage to Seattle Residences 24/7

Home electrical fires are second only to cooking-related fires in frequency. These fires not only create soot, odors, and residues for homeowners to clean, but this process can also entail extensive repair of your home’s electrical system and adjacent structural materials.

If your Seattle home needs electrical fire damage restoration, SERVPRO technicians are available to return your home to a preloss condition 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.

Common Risk Factors for Home Electrical Fires

  • Faulty wiring. Sometimes the cause of the fire is not the devices you plug in, but the wiring in your home. Have your home’s electrical wiring examined if:
    • Your circuit breaker trips several times a month.
    • Wiring might be chewed or frayed.
    • Your lights flicker and frequently dim, especially when using multiple appliances.
  • Damaged electronics. If power cables on your devices are damaged, it can pose a higher fire risk for your home.
  • Overloaded circuits. Be careful not to overload your home’s electrical system, especially if you:
    • -Receive mild shocks from touching appliances.
    • Wall plates look discolored or are unusually warm.
    • Your appliances have a distinctly burnt smell.

SERVPRO Repairs Structural Elements

An electrical fire can affect not just your belongings, but also essential structural components. Finished hardwood, for example, has some nonporous properties on the surface due to the protective coating, and wet cleaning is often sufficient for removing residues. Wood Creme Paste applied with steel wool is effective for removing soot from wood flooring and paneling affected by fire damage. Wood is typically polished after cleaning to replace oils lost during the fire.

SERVPRO of Seattle Northeast serves the community with mitigation and restoration services that are Faster to Any Size Disaster. Call (206) 362-9295 for cleanup that starts within hours of your initial contact.

My Carpet In My Seattle Home Is Wet, Should I Involve A Professional?

Water Damage Restoration Companies like SERVPRO Help Seattle Homeowners Deal with Challenges Arising after Water Spills

Water spills on carpets or other parts of the Seattle house happen all the time. However, most are insignificant, thus easily managed through actions such as blotting the affected areas with towels. In some cases, though, you need assistance from a professional to help save the carpet and restore your Seattle home to its preloss state.

What can indicate that hiring water damage restoration companies is necessary to save my Seattle property?

    •    Completing drying on your own within 72 hours does not seem likely
    •    You are not sure whether the water has reached the subfloor
    •    There is a foul smell

Although these might seem like trivial issues, they have severe consequences. When carpets in your Seattle home are exposed to water over extended periods, problems such as delaminating and mold growth develop. Mold begins to grow within 24-48 hours after water exposure. Our SERVPRO technicians can help expedite the drying process by using powerful water extractors and setting up several air movers and dehumidifiers to complete drying within a favorable timeline.

Even after stopping the source of water, moisture migration continues around the property. If the water reaches hidden areas such as subfloors, it might lead to a permanent problem, even after drying the carpet. Our technicians use sophisticated equipment to trace moisture migration, including thermal cameras that can reveal wet areas in the subfloor without the need for demolition.

Doesn't odor disappear naturally when carpets dry?

You may expect odor to dissipate after drying the carpet since water intrusion marked the starting point. However, smells can linger for several reasons, including:
    •    Mold development on the backing due to improper drying
    •    Dissolved soils stuck in the carpet fibers
    •    Scent from substandard cleaning products

Our SERVPRO technicians incorporate various procedures in the water removal process to eliminate chances of odor development, including applying antimicrobial agents on the carpet backing, incorporating cleaning during water extraction, and monitoring the drying process with moisture meters.

SERVPRO of Seattle Northeast has the resources to manage water spills better. Call us at (206) 362-9295 to help. We’re Faster to Any Size Disaster.

A Burst Pipe Has Caused Water to Pool in My Home, How Do I Solve the Issue?

5/19/2020 (Permalink)

pooling water at feet Do you have a water damage in your home ? Call SERVPRO of Seattle to get it fixed.

Contact SERVPRO to Handle the Water Damage in Your Seattle Residence

Most homeowners in the Seattle area are not ready for an emergency water service. The number one cause of interior damage to houses and buildings is a water break.

Having water pooling in your home after a pipe burst can be a traumatic experience. If it happens in the night, it can be particularly troublesome, and you might wonder whom to call. Thankfully, SERVPRO offers professional water damage restoration services and is available on a 24-hour basis. We're Faster To Any Size Disaster.

What kind of damage can water cause?

A burst pipe can cause water damage in your Seattle home, affecting one or several rooms. Stagnant water can ruin wood flooring, carpeting, drywall, wood beams, insulation, and furnishings. It is not only the water that causes problems since moisture can lead to mold infestation. The longer standing water remains in a home, the harder it is to clean it up. That’s why we can arrive at your home quickly to assess the damage and start remediating the situation.

Why hire professionals to deal with a water intrusion problem?

You need to hire professionals because you do not want to risk doing the job incorrectly. If you perform water restoration poorly, your property could develop a severe damp problem a few months later. Water affects different materials in various ways. Brick and concrete are resistant to water damage while wood can resist short term wetting. However, timber decays if it stays wet for an extended period. Dense materials do not retain much water, but they dry slowly, whereas porous materials absorb much water, but dry quickly.

What does SERVPRO do to restore a water-damaged house?

Our expert technicians begin the restoration process by removing standing water. Water removal helps prevent further damage. Our team has suitable equipment for removing water from different kinds of floors. For instance, for glue-down carpeting, we can use a carpet wand to extract the water. This equipment is ideal for removing water initially and for removing residual water on the surface of carpeting after we have used a stationary tool. We can then clean and dry the carpet and eliminate any debris that could be present. We also have drying tools that can eliminate moisture from walls, flooring, and the framing of your home.

Do not let a water intrusion incident ruin your home severely. Call SERVPRO of Seattle Northeast at (206) 362-9295 for quick restoration that can make the damage seem, “Like it never even happened.”

How Does SERVPRO Extract the Water from Flood Damage in Seattle Homes?

Tools Our Team Can use to Remove Flood Damage from Your Home

Flood damage rolls into properties hard. Even an inch of water has the potential to devastate a property in Seattle. The faster the cleanup begins assists in limiting the loss due to water exposure and the accompanying issues such as mold or ruination of the structure or contents requiring replacement.

SERVPRO technicians have extensive training handling restoration from flood damage in Seattle properties. The water extraction methods used have a significant impact on the restorability of the home.

Types of Water Removal

Since floodwater can contain a host of harmful elements, the technicians wear personal protective gear, and containment, when only a portion of the home is affected to halt cross-contamination, is standard. SERVPRO uses a broad array of equipment to perform the extraction. The variety of devices used depends on the surfaces that need water removal. The ride-on units and portable pumps with weighted extractor heads push the water out of carpet and padding. Squeegees may get used on tile or concrete substrate.

Other commonplace tools used during water cleanup include:

  • Mops
  • LGR and desiccant dehumidifiers to capture airborne droplets
  • Truck-mounted pumps for large jobs

SERVPRO of Seattle Northeast at (206) 362-9295 is ready 24/7 to get fast restoration services for any size flood damage problem. The certified techs use their extensive experience and skill to make the water loss, "Like it never even happened."

What Can I Do with My Fire Damage Furniture?

Saving Hardwood Furniture after Fire Damage Incidents in Seattle

Hardwood furniture is not only expensive but might also have sentimental value since such pieces are usually passed on as family heirlooms. After fire damage in your Seattle home, it might be possible to save such items preserving their sentimental or monetary value. The restoration might involve regular cleaning or other advanced processes.

Whether the restoration of furniture after fire damage incidents in Seattle succeeds depends on factors such as the extent of damage and the type of finish applied on the items. There is a wide variety of finishes used on furniture items including varnish, shellac, waxes, lacquer or paint. Some items might also have unfinished surfaces. The types of damages can also range from staining, blistering, or charring, each type with its unique challenges.

Wiping unfinished or unsealed furniture items can be challenging, especially when there are oily residues. Our SERVPRO technicians use various dry cleaning procedures, including feather dusting, dry cleaning sponges, dusting cloths, and vacuums with dusting tool. We also use brushes of different sizes for detailed cleaning to remove residues from crevices and decorative trim.

Another way to restore furniture affected during a fire incident is through wet cleaning. Our technicians use a low alkali surface cleaner or a mild detergent made for wood furniture. Following unique approaches such as cleaning in the direction of the wood grain and applying oil-based furniture polish help improve the outcome, including restoring the wood's natural oils.

Sometimes the damage on furniture items may require semi-refinishing steps, especially if it involves massive residue deposits. Our SERVPRO technicians use a semi-refinishing process that removes an ultrathin top layer of the finish. We accomplish this by applying a wood paste cleaner and letting it sit for three to five minutes before dusting it off with a soft clean cloth.

It is not always possible to save furniture after fire incidents. However, when possible, no effort should be spared. Call SERVPRO of Seattle Northeast at (206) 362-9295 to help. We're Faster To Any Size Disaster.

A small leak might seem like it isn't a big deal at first. Putting a small object to catch the leaking water seemed like a decent solution at first. Should the leak suddenly turn into a break in the pipe from pressure and buildup, you'll find yourself in a time-crunch very suddenly.

My Sink is Severely Leaking, What Can Water Damage Technicians Do?

How Do I Get Water Out Of My Business Office?

5/8/2020 (Permalink)

Contact SERVPRO Commercial Services to Quickly Restore Operations in Seattle

With the current crisis, many Seattle agencies now have their employees working from home. With the office space now empty or supporting only a skeleton staff for reduced hours, the threat from a broken pipe, sink, or toilet can greatly increase.

Since my building is closed anyway, what is the rush?

If left standing, even a shallow layer of water can quickly cause industrial carpeting to separate from the glue and its fibers begin to rot. In addition to the physical damage, the degradation also generates an odor that can permeate the entire Seattle building. If your business is only renting space in the facility, and the water spread to other Seattle agencies, they might try to bill your company for their physical restoration and odor elimination costs as well.

OK then, how do you get started?

For water, more than an inch deep, our restoration team brings in pumps to draw off the water. After that, technicians use extraction devices to quickly draw water off floors and out of carpets. Next, they set up air movers to generate a flow of warm air across the carpet surface to dry it. If the humidity is too high, they install dehumidifiers to draw down the moisture content and speed up the drying process.

What if the water is from a backed-up sewer or septic tank?

Much of what SERVPRO does remains the same, with additional tasks such as carpet and pad removal, and spraying floors with an anti-bacterial cleaner to eliminate any health threats. If the contamination gets into the drywall or another type of paneling, team members remove the panels for disposal. They can quickly replace them with new panels and paint to match the existing color scheme. Biohazardous services certainly require an extra level of caution and expertise.

Here at SERVPRO of Seattle Northeast, we understand the need to have your business ready to reopen in a manner safe for employees and customers. Call us at (206) 362-9295 today for more details on how we can help you.

How Do I Cleanup Water Damage Found During Remodeling of My Seattle Kitchen?

4/30/2020 (Permalink)

water damaged hardwood When leaks happen to your home, know that SERVPRO is here for complete restoration. We are trained and equipped to handle any size water loss event.

SERVPRO Can Restore Your Seattle Kitchen from Any Water Loss

Getting an updated kitchen is an excellent way to increase the value of your home. However, sometimes problems get found, such as supply line leaks, appliance issues, and other things that leave water loss evidence behind. You cannot build on top of that, and it needs to get mitigated before the Seattle kitchen makeover can continue.

What are Signs of Water Damage in a Seattle Kitchen?

Before remodeling your Seattle kitchen, the water damage signs could have been subtle such as:

  • Finding small amounts of water on the floor
  • Loosened tile
  • Floorboards that appear swelled
  • Sheetrock that looks buckled or warped
  • Water stains on walls or ceilings
  • A musty odor that never diminishes

Why Choose a Seattle Professional Restoration Services Company?

While you may be doing your kitchen upgrade on your own, the removal of water needs professional equipment for both extraction and drying for the best outcome. Also, it is impossible to determine all areas of water loss in a room visually. SERVPRO technicians have extensive, on-going education in the restoration sciences and have access to a large selection of moisture detection equipment to find anywhere water migrated within a room.

Actions such as weep holes that allow drainage can reduce loss and limit the sheetrock that requires removal if it has wicked moisture. Controlled demolition when needed, such as flood cuts on ruined sheetrock and removal of cabinets, works to handle large sections of wall that are a loss and open the structural areas for complete drying.

The types of extraction equipment and methods assist with lessening the drying time for the loss area. The most typically used water removal equipment most Seattle homeowners see the techs using is the fleet of portable pumps. These allow the cleanup crews to be mobile and reach any area in the kitchen needed. The pulling power helps remove embedded moisture, and the practice of doing several passes removes the maximum amount of water, which lessens the time required for drying.

Are Air Movers the Same as Fans in Seattle?

In a word, no. Even if several household fans got used to dry a kitchen, their airflow would, at best, dry the surfaces. The speed at which an air mover delivers airflow is at such a high velocity creates a chain reaction that causes any remaining moisture to rise to the surface. SERVPRO techs always run air movers in tandem with professional dehumidification equipment, which works to grab the moisture in the air and port it off-site.

When situations arise, such as water seepage into the subfloor or within walls, the techs have specialized drying applications to deal with that. One frequently used piece of equipment that is useful for forcing air into small openings is the Injecti-Dry system. This little dynamo uses the power of an air mover delivered through multiple small hose attachments to force the air in the areas needing drying.

Can Seattle Hardwood Flooring with Exposure to Water Get Restored?

Hardwoods such as oak, maple, and cherry are the types most often found gracing kitchen floors. These woods are durable and hold up to wear and occasional spills better than softer wood types such as pine. The factors that determine if the boards are restorable include:

  • The length of time the boards had exposure to moisture
  • The presence of mold
  • The construction materials that compose the boards
  • How quickly restoration services began
  • Whether or not professional drying applications got used

When drying hardwood floorboards, the techs often turn to drying mats; this type of equipment lays flat and forces the warm, dry into directly into the boards. The techs move them during the drying phase to make sure the boards dry evening. This action assists with lessening the warping and helps the boards dry flatter with less sanding needed for the full restoration.

Tactics for Seattle Water Loss Restoration for Carpeted Flooring

While most kitchens do not have carpeted floors, it is not unusual for water loss in one room to affect another. When carpeted flooring gets wet, the padding absorbs the water readily, and it can be difficult to remove and dry on your own. The weighted extractor heads SERVPRO techs use work to push the water out of the carpet and pad. The specialized drying methods such as "floating" where a side gets loosened and air forced underneath works to dry the carpet from the bottom up. Water spots and stains are not an issue as the technicians have the deep cleaning equipment to take care of those too.

SERVPRO of Seattle Northeast at (206) 362-9295 handles all types of water damage in local properties. The technicians show up fast and restore your home and contents to their preloss condition.

Some Warning Signs of Fire Damage After a Garage Fire in Seattle

4/19/2020 (Permalink)

fire fighters putting out garage fire Don't fret if fire damage affected your garage. Contact SERVPRO right after the fire fighters leave for effective remediation services.

Fire Damage in a Seattle Garage

Of all the reasons for fire damage, one of the most frustrating is the fire that had the potential to get prevented. Merely doing a walkthrough of your property every month and making sure fire alarms are in working order can go a long way towards limiting the chances of a residential fire.

Another standard action that gets Seattle homeowners in danger of fire damage to their homes is the improper storage of flammable substances in their garage. Any type of chemical, gasoline, or other material that emits VOCs can cause a fire.

Stopping Cross-Contamination

Putting up containment in the form of either a negative air chamber or simply blocking entrances to the home assists in limiting the spread of soot to other areas of the home during fire loss cleanup. Air scrubbers get used to capture airborne particulates and further improve air quality.

Saving as Much as Possible

The goal of SERVPRO technicians going into any restoration service is to save the homeowner the cost of replacement whenever possible. In a garage, they can move out charred items and inspect standard items found in this area of the home, such as shelving, stored items, and lawn care equipment for restoration potential. Things such as garage doors can be costly to replace when the advanced restoration methods used by the techs allow for reuse after cleaning.

Testing Before Reuse

For electrical equipment present during the fire, such as band saws and woodworking equipment, soot can damage the internal workings. The techs can arrange for a certified professional to inspect the devices to be sure they are undamaged and safe to use again.

Post Restoration Actions

Once the techs complete the cleanup of the garage, they provide the homeowner with a report that details all actions taken during the fire loss mitigation, including detailed descriptions and photographs of building materials and contents that needed disposal as well as things that received restorative procedures for reuse.

SERVPRO of Seattle Northeast at (206) 362-9295 has the skills and equipment to clean up fire damage and make the loss, "Like it never even happened."

Differences in Materials During Water Removal Jobs in Seattle

3/17/2020 (Permalink)

Two small children floating on a upside down table over a flooded kitchen. Water damage to your Seattle home will be hard, let us help you and your family ride the wave out.

Let SERVPRO show you the differences when it comes to your Seattle water damage.

After extracting standing water from a Seattle dwelling, we consider several factors as we set up drying equipment that is crucial to achieving complete dryness again. One factor is the interior architecture of a home, as this can alter where we must place air movers and dehumidifiers, as well as where we can gain the most efficient drying chambers. Another aspect of a house that affects our work is the composition of the interior’s building materials.

For homeowners in Seattle, water removal and drying can seem complicated. Removing water should always include active drying measures but this requires machinery that most homeowners do not own. SERVPRO is always nearby to help homeowners with restoring their homes and protecting their belongings, as well. Helping you and your family with our water removal expertise can help you recover after a plumbing failure, forgotten faucet that overflows, or even a flooding event.

Some materials have a tighter hold on water than other materials. Natural stone might seem entirely waterproof, but tiny cracks in polished stone or less dense stone, like sandstone, means stone can retain moisture and require some extra help to become fully dry. Leaving it to ‘dry naturally’ means mold can settle in and form an infestation. Heat and higher velocity air movers can help prevent this from happening.

Walls might not gain as much exposure to water as your floors, but they also might contain hidden water. This can seep outward and ruin drywall, paneling, or plaster. We drain these and then force warm air into their interior, allowing the now-damp air to exit. When reconstruction can help, our building services department is always ready.

Floors also dry faster when we remove water from below them with special mats that use heat and concentrated airflow and suction up the trapped water. Carpeting saturated with clean water responds well to carpet cleaning machines, coupled with an air mover. Floating a carpet, when possible, can save padding, although not in all cases.

SERVPRO of Seattle Northeast understands the concerns of our customers and we know how to ensure that your Lake City or Wedgwood house receives the attention it deserves. We also serve homeowners in the University District. Call (206) 362-9295 for water removal services that fit your budget and the specifics of your residence’s interior.

Commercial Water Damage Relief In Seattle

3/11/2020 (Permalink)

Aggressive Extraction Is the Best Practice for Seattle Commercial Water Damage Relief

Without a doubt, our inventory of air movers, heaters, and dehumidifiers do an excellent job of bringing Seattle’s business property back to preloss condition. Failure to commit to thorough extraction of liquid water beforehand, however, causes structural drying to take many times as long. Since lingering moisture can contribute to mold and other secondary damage, it is best practices to extract as much water as possible before moving on to drying strategies.

Extraction Basics
Water damage in your Seattle technology center can create panic, but our crew is on the spot quickly with high-efficiency water removal equipment. Some of the machinery we use can be set up and left to do their job; other units our certified technicians operate.

Pumping the Water Out
Pumps are most useful when water is deeper than two inches. They can be submersible and placed in confined spaces; their discharge directs to a treated sewer line under most city codes. When powered by gas motors, they can get to work even if the electricity in your building is temporarily shut off for safety reasons.

Using Extractors
Truck-mounted extractors are powerful and capacious, holding up to more than 100 gallons in a storage tank. If SERVPRO managers evaluated the water inside your commercial building as Category 2 or 3 (contaminated), we contain it for lawful disposal as hazardous waste. Truck-mounts can be powered from our service vehicles, avoiding the need to delay water removal if electricity is unavailable.

Portable extractors are smaller and lighter, but still able to pull large amounts of water out of carpets and off of solid flooring. SERVPRO technicians can use these machines to reach restricted spaces and attach extenders to get into tight recesses.

Extraction Prepares for Structural Drying
Extraction is the first method of removing standing water and moisture absorbed into porous materials such as carpeting and upholstery. Research shows extraction to be 1200 times more efficient than drying alone. Because speed is critical when responding to a commercial water loss, SERVPRO commits to thorough extraction to shorten the drying process.

Contact SERVPRO of Seattle Northeast for comprehensive mitigation and remediation services after commercial water damage. Call (206) 362-9295 to arrange for a skilled crew to assess and manage your loss.

Seattle Homes Receive Professional Cleanup and Restoration Services from SERVPRO Following Water Losses and Flooding

Understanding the Biohazard Risks of Flood Damage Cleanup in Seattle

Homeowners dealing with flooding in Seattle view with dismay their water-logged house's structures and contents. Even more disturbing is the news they receive that not only has initially relatively clean rainwater entered their abode, on its journey from the sky, and then overland, it brought along a host of substances that make it highly contaminated. Industrial waste, decaying organic matter, chemicals from pavements and the ground, and other hazards sweep inside, needing containment and appropriate disposal.

Biohazards Typically Seen During Flooding

Biohazards suspended or dissolved in the fluids filling your Seattle home complicate flood damage cleanup. Often the overland flooding joins sewage backup in your basement as overwhelmed local storm drains fail to accept the waste from your toilets, sinks, and tubs. Sewage and floodwater should be treated as highly infectious waste material as it can contain:

Cholera, tetanus, typhoid, polio, hepatitis, and other infectious diseases, the pathogens carried by blood, urine, and feces. Methane and other sewer gasses harmful to breathe we work to eliminate.

  • Pre-existing active colonies of which can be disturbed by flood cleanup
  • Dormant mold spores waiting for moisture to sprout
  • New generation and growth of mold colonies when moisture remains for more than 24 to 48 hours

How We Manage the Risks for Customers

Containment is the password for safe flood damage cleanup. Containment includes two related but slightly different concepts:

Containment of the Affected Space

SERVPRO project managers often decide to control contamination concerns by constructing a contaminant "structure" or a series of "rooms" around and leading into the work area. Using 6 mil polyethylene, we cover doors and other openings, often using negative pressure air scrubbers to seal the space. Depending on each set of circumstances, the work area is augmented with various configurations of:

  • Decontamination areas
  • Equipment rooms
  • Clean rooms
  • Contents cleaning rooms

Containment (and Disposal) of the Hazardous Substances

As we begin collecting the contaminated floodwaters, we contain them for disposal. SERVPRO is familiar with local regulations concerning lawfully discarding waste.

How Our Crew Manages the Personal Risks

The SERVPRO technicians working to clean up the flood damage follow all industry best practices safety precautions, including immunization against diseases in consultation with each employee's healthcare practitioner. We also outfit our crews in full personal protective equipment (PPE) to avoid breathing or skin contact with the broad range of hazards possible in floodwaters.

About Structural and Content Damage in Seattle Area Homes

As an IICRC certified firm, we have many qualified technicians that can ably handle the restoration services Northeast Seattle home and business owners need. We continue to grow and expand, offering new services that branch out from the traditional recovery niches of water, fire, mold, and storm loss restoration. Our team can perform biohazard cleanup, asbestos inspection, and plays a vital role in a Large Loss Recovery Team (LLRT) encompassing three other area franchises managed by our same owners. We are always looking for new and improved ways to help out our friends and neighbors in coastal Washington.
Much like other coastal communities, Seattle remains at the mercy of fierce and unpredictable weather systems that develop on the Pacific and make landfall at often devastating force. Because of how quickly one storm can affect hundreds of area homes and businesses, our disaster relief team is one of the most well-trained and readily available units in our SERVPRO brand. We know that when structural damages have occurred, that every second counts. We save our customers time and money with an efficient response to the emergency.
Structural breaches often lead to flooding, especially considering the penchant of the Pacific Northwest to contend with excessive rains and wet conditions. Runoff and direct rainfall over even a single day can leave substantial flooding throughout the Seattle residence. We have an in-house division of licensed general contractors that can help with emergency repairs and temporary construction solutions to reduce water penetration so our team can work on removing flood effects from the house. Our accredited contracting division is part of the area Association of General Contractors (AGC.)
We have to stay prepared for changing conditions and needs on a job site, especially with the high-rise buildings full of apartments throughout Seattle. Flooding in these buildings can be challenging to restore, and often requires the use of our electric sump pump and other portable, lightweight gear for round-the-clock recovery solutions.
One of the first things that we can do for your water damaged Seattle residence is to give it the thorough and proper inspection and job scoping that it deserves. Water loss effects can get overlooked quickly, especially without the advanced discovery devices that our project manager and crew chief use to conduct our assessments. With surface monitoring moisture detectors, probing moisture meters, and infrared imagery, we can get a full understanding of the presence and severity of current damp conditions in the house.
While, in some cases, we utilize traditional drying approaches for professional restoration, such as a selection of our hundreds of air movers and dehumidifiers, this is not the extent of our available tools. We can also rely on specialty tools ideal for specific situations, such as positive and negative pressure systems for structural cavity drying or weighted stand-on extraction pads for removing moisture from the subflooring and padding of carpeted areas of Seattle homes.
We can double-check our drying efforts against the moisture baseline established through our SERVPRO DryBook software during the initial inspection of a Seattle residence. However, we often remain cautious about the possibility of moisture content by protecting potentially exposed surfaces with a treatment of antimicrobial solutions. This potent product can eliminate spores on contact and make a sprayed surface uninhabitable to migrating mold colonies.
Mold can develop in as little as 48 hours under the right conditions, and it is why many of the water loss incidents that we get notified of have already had a degree of this damage beginning. The faster that these situations can get addressed for Seattle homes, the less widespread and potentially health effects they can become. An early solution to reduce the airborne spore and volatile organic compound threats is the use of air scrubbers and hydroxyl generators to pull the air through a HEPA filtration system.
Treating light colonization can sometimes be as simple as applying the same antimicrobial solutions that we use to prevent fungal growth after water loss incidents. In more severe cases, we must rely on effective remediation practices such as sanding and even controlled demolition to remove active colonization from Seattle properties. Also, our SERVPRO team must address musty odors that colonies can emit, which can affect soft materials like clothing and carpeting. Thermal fogging can often neutralize these challenging scents.
As we have a team of contractors, we can offer a level of mold remediation otherwise uncommon to the Seattle area. We can personally oversee controlled demolition and full-scale build back of compromised areas of your home. These experienced tradespeople can work with our customers for exact specifications on reconstruction, remodeling, or renovation changes after remediation.
There is no mistaking how severe and overwhelming fire losses can be in Seattle residences, especially if you do not understand how restoration works or what can be done to get you back into your home again. Our SERVPRO professionals are a patient team of highly experienced Fire & Smoke Restoration Technicians (FSRT) and Odor Control Technicians (OCT) accredited through the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC.) Not only do our professionals understand how to restore your home, but they can also take the time to help put you at ease with this process as well.
From the earliest stages with emergency services, we can address conditions like water loss from firefighting, a structural compromise that requires demolition, and content management. Debris removal is another preliminary phase that can help to reduce the presence of hazardous soot particles and reduces the severity of smoke odors as well in Seattle homes. We can offer more focused cleaning and deodorization as required before official mitigation work begins on the property.
As licensed general contractors, we can remove stained and marred surfaces, structurally compromised construction materials, and charred or blistered contents from Seattle homes. When restoration completes, these same professionals can help with full scale build back to make these losses “Like it never even happened.”

We Want To Help You Avoid Disasters From Water Damage Caused By Old Or Faulty Appliances In Your Seattle Home

You might not know that the water heater installed in your Seattle home only has an average life expectancy of ten to fifteen years? When you factor in mismanagement, lack of service, and heightened mineral presence in the water that can lead to scaling inside the tank, ruptures become a more common scenario. With many residential tanks capable of holding 80 gallons of water in the tank alone, a rupture could cause immediate damages.

Without regular servicing or inspections, it might not be easy to determine when disasters might occur that require water removal in Seattle homes. Understanding the health and remaining service life is an even greater challenge without when you are not responsible for its initial installation. Purchasing a home can leave you with questions about the age of specific elements like the water heater tank or other appliances.

Water extraction is a crucial element to restoring the utility area of your home after a catastrophe like a ruptured water tank. A breach in this component could empty the full contents onto the floor of this space, requiring effective water removal with electric sump pumps, or with squeegee extractors when water can get redirected to an open floor drain to reduce the immediate threat.

Migrating water can also affect the hallway outside of your laundry room area, saturating the carpet and its padding. We have efficient removal strategies for this situation as well, including the use of a light wand attached to an extractor or one of several models of weighted extractors to force moisture from the padding and carpet layers simultaneously. An onboard vacuum can remove displaced moisture and discharge it into a utility sink or other drain nearby.

Multiple conditions can lead to the rupture of your water heater, unloading the contents onto the floor of your home. Our SERVPRO of Seattle Northeast team has efficient extraction tools that can remove this surface water to protect your property from irreparable damage while our technicians dry up the impacted areas. No matter how we can help make water losses, “Like it never even happened,” give us a call today at (206) 362-9295.

SERVPRO Restores a Seattle Kitchen After Fire and Smoke Damage

1/31/2020 (Permalink)

A man holding a pan that is smoking in a kitchen. A kitchen fire damage can be devastating, let SERVPRO help you through.

Seattle, SERVPRO can show you all you need to know when it comes to your fire damage.

Fire damage is one of the most common disasters in the United States. In 2018 alone, $25.6 billion worth of property damage was caused by fire, including $12 billion from wildfires. $11.1 billion worth of damage occurred due to structure fires, and of that, $8 billion accounted for property loss due to home fires.

If your Seattle home has suffered fire and smoke damage, SERVPRO teams are available 24/7, including weekends and holidays, to restore your home to a preloss condition. Soot residues and odors pose long-term risks that can damage your home and possessions without careful cleaning with professional-grade products. Because of this, SERVPRO technicians receive specialized training in fire damage mitigation so that you can enjoy a residue and odor-free home.

Dealing With A Home Fire

  • Make sure everyone is safely out of the home. The most important thing during a fire is preserving the health and safety of occupants.
  • Always have a fire extinguisher on hand. This lets you mitigate small fires before they can spread. Baking soda and salt can also help put out small grease fires. Never use water to extinguish a fire, especially if oil, gas, or petroleum products are burning, as this can spread the flames to new areas.
  • Maximize ventilation. After the fire is extinguished, turn off your air conditioning and position large fans near doorways and windows to suck out smoke and prevent it from spreading throughout your home.
  • File a claim as soon as possible. Many insurers have time limits for when claims can be filed. The sooner you submit yours, the sooner you can be compensated for lost items and structural damage.

SERVPRO Removes Odor-Causing Residues

If the fire damage in your home is not responding to consumer-grade cleanup solutions, SERVPRO technicians have the tools needed to mitigate fire damage. Industrial-grade dry cleaning sponges can remove light to moderate stains. Others can respond well to Crumbly Cleaner or wet cleaning with OSHA-approved antimicrobial solutions. Restoration technicians can also use whips, augers, brushes, and other agitating tools to remove deposits from your vents, which prevents the spread of odors throughout your home.

How SERVPRO Dries Your Seattle Water Damaged Business

1/20/2020 (Permalink)

Outside view of multi-story office building Water damage can close your office. We have the tools and expertise to quickly remove the water and dry your building.

Air Mover Use During Commercial Water Removal in Seattle

Air movers are vital pieces of equipment when we respond to a water loss at your Seattle business, essential to accelerate the process of evaporation. The Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) our crews earn in various aspects of psychrometry, the science of drying, underlies research-based techniques to ensure our inventory of air movers delivers drying success.

Water Extraction Plus Drying Equals Removal

Water removal in your Seattle office building starts with the pumping and suctioning of liquid fluids. Our team uses submersible pumps for water deeper than two inches. We then augment that action with truck-mounted or portable extractors that remove non-absorbed water from surfaces and building cavities before the final drying phase. Effective structural drying requires us to monitor or adjust the following elements during the project:

  • Moisture levels in porous materials
  • Temperature
  • Humidity
  • Airflow

Planning for Effective and Efficient Air Movement

Appropriate airflow direction and intensity are crucial during drying. SERVPRO technicians set up air movers with precise parameters in mind. We avoid blowing the humid air directly back at a wall, aiming for a 45-degree angle instead. Our crew places air movers in a clockwise pattern, inlets towards the wall, and the snouts touching the wall. We use enough air movers to make sure every affected wall is in the angled air stream. When the spaces needing structural drying are vast and interconnected, our technicians set up additional air movers in closets, alcoves, and hallways to prevent any surfaces from missing out on the drying benefits. Periodically we reposition the air movers to enhance the drying outcomes. Business owners and staff must not move or shut down the equipment during drying.

Special Attention for Ceilings and Cavities

When water damages ceilings as well as walls, the SERVPRO plan is to direct airflow across ceilings. Sending the flow upwards recirculates the warm air, improving drying outcomes throughout a high-ceilinged space. If the construction of your office building includes a drop ceiling, opening some panels on each end assists in spreading warm, dry air through those compartments. Pulling off the typically vinyl baseboards and drilling holes near the floor line permits air movers, sometimes attached to hoses, to dry out between walls.

Continuous Monitoring Required During Drying

Throughout the water removal process, we compare humidity and moisture baseline measurements with current readings. SERVPRO does not use timelines or visual inspection to determine that water removal has completed in your office building. Only when our sensitive devices indicate that moisture levels are back to normal, do we pull the drying equipment, including air movers.

We have the training and equipment to facilitate water removal in your business. Contact SERVPRO of Seattle Northeast at (206) 362-9295 to schedule an assessment after a water loss.

Moisture Elimination from Seattle Structures by SERVPRO Mitigates Water Damage

green air movers and a dehumidifier in a room SERVPRO Provides and Places Air Movers to Maximize Evaporation and Minimize Water Damage to Seattle Area Properties

The Role of Air Movers in Drying Damaged Seattle Homes

When air movers get discussed, it is a common belief that we are just referring to traditional fans you already use to cool areas of your Seattle home in the warmer months. In truth, these vital tools of our drying process are more advanced and serve a more specific purpose than just circulating air throughout a room. Depending on their type and design, there are numerous applications for air movers in a moisture-damaged property.

Understanding the role of air movers can help you to appreciate the efficiency that our SERVPRO team handles water damage in Seattle houses. Air movers are essential components for increasing the efficiency of evaporation of surface water and moisture. During the evaporation process, a cold air boundary can form around a drying material and slow further drying efforts. Air movers disperse this cooler air and directly impact the affected material with warmer, drier air. Choosing the right type of air mover for the job is vital to how efficiently these drying tasks complete, as well.
Axial Air Movers
Axial units move a larger volume of air than other types of air movers, which allows the machine to cover a greater area. Unlike centrifugal, these devices are for broader drying tasks because of their higher output volume.
Centrifugal Air Movers
With a rotating impeller, air enters and can then get redistributed with force to a specific point in front of the air mover output. Centrifugal units get designed to provide greater surface evaporation by producing higher static pressures for air volume. Our SERVPRO team can direct these machines at the worst specific saturation points for maximizing drying efforts. There are also even low-profile centrifugal units that can be ideal for tighter spaces and directly impacting areas like structural cavities after flood cutting.
Utilizing air movers is a vital component of our drying process. We have hundreds of air movers, so offering every property the volume that maximizes drying and moisture removal can happen right away.
We deploy the tools and equipment that can overcome water loss incidents, no matter how severe this damage might be. Give our SERVPRO of Seattle Northeast team a call anytime at (206) 362-9295.

Can You Remove Floodwater from Seattle Homes on Your Own?

Many homeowners delay the restoration of their Seattle homes after flooding because they believe that DIY methods are sufficient to address the current conditions of their property. In short, flooding of your property can present widespread concerns that penetrate far beyond the surface levels of exposed materials. Professional restoration offers specific advantages over attempting to restore your home on your own after a flood.

One of the immediate advantages of choosing professional restoration services like our SERVPRO team is the array of extraction tools in our inventory for flood water removal in Seattle homes. We have dozens of machines capable of handling smaller volumes of water in a vacuum to our more massive and more formidable pumps that can move thousands of gallons of water per hour. We can fit the right extraction tool to the specific circumstances to ensure that we can provide a consistent draw of standing water until the damaged region is ready for drying.

Addressing the water that you cannot see is another level of removal that many homeowners do not even recognize. With advanced detection devices such as surface moisture meters and probes, our SERVPRO professionals can identify the presence of moisture in materials and the degree of concentration. With drying equipment like our positive pressure systems, we can even dry out wall and ceiling cavities that might hold water after migrating flood conditions

The placement and use of centrifugal air movers can help to begin evaporative drying. These units provide a focused blast of heated air at a specific point on a moist surface to evaporate surface dampness. When materials have become too severely damaged to remain structurally sound or present a substantial risk for microbial growth, we can look to our in-house division of licensed general contractors to help with controlled demolition and build back.

As damaging as flooding can be for your property, our SERVPRO of Seattle Northeast team can help with sophisticated technology and advanced equipment. We can help when you need full restoration through an inspection of the drying work that you have done in your home after a flood. Give us a call anytime at (206) 362-9295.

Water Extraction Solves Different Accidents and Mishaps in Your Seattle Area Residence

The upkeep of your Seattle property is vital for your family's health and well-being, as well as the integrity of the house. Accidents happen, despite the many precautions you make. SERVPRO is always able to help out and restore the things that mean the most to your family. When sections of pipe freeze, other areas can swell and rupture. Other accidents can cause similar problems.

Such line breaks in your residence in Seattle need immediate water extraction assistance. A broken pipe lets hundreds of gallons into a house's living space in a short time. Appliances can also create watery messes if they malfunction, and forgetting to turn off the faucet can cause a tub or sink to overflow. Aquariums can shatter or topple if children play too roughly nearby, and putting out a fire, large or small, often means water now soaks part of your home.

SERVPRO technicians use highly efficient machines to extract the water damage. Then we can concentrate on reducing the excess moisture in any affected building materials and decreasing the humidity to normal again. To work as efficiently as possible, we want to know precisely which areas absorbed the water. Our infrared cameras prevent us from working on unaffected areas.

We do not rely on how damp or dry surfaces feel when we touch them to ascertain its condition, and instead, we use moisture meters. The amount of moisture detected shows up on the device's screen and we compare this reading to internationally accepted moisture content levels in similar materials. Almost every item inside your home contains some amount of moisture. These monitors allow us to dry your home's interior without over-drying, as well.

When using forced-air systems (which are crucial to fast and effective drying), we need to use an entry hole and an exit one, as well. Wherever possible, we use pre-existing openings or locations where we can hide the opening afterward. In the absence of either of these two, our building crew assists with drilling and, once we finish, closing the necessary openings for us.

SERVPRO of Seattle Northeast is always available to get your Lake City,University District, of Wedgwood residence dry, “Like it never even happened,” via water extraction techniques. Contact us at (206) 362-9295, 24/7, year-round.

Saving Contents with Water Damage in Seattle

Homeowners discovering water deterioration at a late stage can face a real challenge. On the one hand, replacing content and structure can ensure that there are no further issues or cross-contamination. On the other hand, contents are what make a house a home and can hold sentimental value. Not to mention that the costs and work to replace large amounts of structure can rise quickly — our restoration services center on restoring rather than replacing. We use gifted water restoration technicians (WRT) to achieve surprising results.

When you discover water damage in your Seattle home, the first thing to do is contact your insurance provider. SERVPRO can work with your insurer to restore your property on time and on-budget. Some items with prolonged exposure may still need replacing. Unfortunately, after seventy-two hours, a clean water emergency can deteriorate into a grey or black one. Severe levels of water contamination often result in the widescale replacement of porous materials like drywall.

One thing that SERVPRO can do is provide professional care and attention to your content. Specialized services from document recovery to mitigating deterioration of valuable electronic devices like computers or televisions can often be carried out on-site. While reversing the water damage is difficult, we can prevent further damage from occurring- a process referred to as mitigating loss.

Our team of SERVPRO technicians is experts at mitigating loss. Fabrics are naturally porous, which can create a problem as they absorb contamination in water levels quickly. We provide customers the opportunity to restore these fabrics by sending them to an external facility for mechanical cleaning. Chief among our mechanical cleaning equipment is our Esporta washing machines, which can remove up to 98% of soiling from fabrics.

While home emergencies can, and often do, come at precisely the wrong time. You can have confidence that many of your items are restorable if you use a professional restoration service like ours. We operate emergency contact lines twenty-four hours a day and utilize local technicians to reduce call-out times, as little as four hours from notification of loss.

Time is of the essence in home restoration, contact SERVPRO of Seattle Northeast at (206) 362-9295.

Discussing the Use of Dehumidifiers to Respond to Commercial Water Damage in Seattle

When professional crews plan the recovery phases for a large, commercial water loss in Seattle, they rely heavily on the action of dehumidification equipment, especially after pumps and extractors suction up and contain the bulk of liquid water. In general, dehumidifiers lower the relative humidity in a space by removing water vapor from the air. Three main types of dehumidifiers have roles in professional commercial water removal. We choose among the options, sometimes changing the type of dehumidifier as conditions evolve.

Refrigerant Dehumidifiers

The most used type of dehumidifier used to respond to Seattle commercial water damage works by condensing moisture. Condensation occurs after moist air moves across a cold evaporator coil 20 to 30 degrees below the dewpoint in the affected area. The vapor in the air condenses into water droplets then collected for disposal. An adjacent warmer coil then increases the temperature of the dryer air. Then a fan exhausts the warmer, drier air back into your business space. Refrigerant dehumidifiers can reduce humidity to approximately 40 grains per pound (GPP). GPP expresses the weight of water in a given weight of air, here a pound of dry air.

Low Grain Refrigerants (LGR)

SERVPRO might turn to a humidifier that can bring relative humidity levels down even further in some cases. An LGR dehumidifier recools the air pulled through before exposure to the evaporator coil, permitting moisture measurements to dip below 40 GPP.  An LGR provides the most energy-efficient dehumidification. This device is considered a work horse.

Desiccant Dehumidifiers

SERVPRO’s desiccant dehumidifiers work differently. Moist air entering the process air inlet passes through a silica gel-filled rotor. The gel attracts water, capturing water from the air. Three-quarters of the air pulled through the desiccant dehumidifier exhausts out as warm, dry conditioned air. The dehumidifier heats the remaining quarter of the air to a higher temperature. It is rerouted to the rotor to pick up water vapor to prevent the rotor from saturation. This “reactivated” air pumps out of the dehumidifier, along with the moisture.

Conditions Determine Which Dehumidifier to Use

When the temperatures in your commercial building range between 50 and 95 degrees, SERVPRO most likely recommends LGR or regular refrigeration dehumidification. If you have unheated spaces, the temperature can dip in our region to less than 50 degrees during the winter. A desiccant dehumidifier continues to remove moisture under those conditions. If structural materials like hardwood flooring are still wet after porous items like drywall or carpeting are dry, desiccant dehumidifiers offer appropriate drying action. They also help out in confined spaces common in commercial buildings.

Rely on SERVPRO of Seattle Northeast to select the most efficient dehumidification equipment after water damage to your business. Call us for a consultation at (206) 362-9295.

What Equipment is Needed to Remove Water in Seattle Flood Damaged Homes?

11/19/2019 (Permalink)

SERVPRO air movers drying water damaged building Flooding is no match for SERVPRO. We have the equipment and expertise to tackle your home restoration needs.

How Multiple Extractors Can Help Flooded Seattle Homes

It is a rare occurrence that one singular extraction device is necessary for water removal in Seattle homes after a flood. These disasters can occur in both natural rising water levels and through the structural breaches that can plague homes and businesses after severe weather events. Considering the harsh storm systems that can make landfall across the Pacific Northwest, restoration teams should stay prepared to respond quickly with the equipment to help.

The need for flood removal in Seattle residences is an immediate threat that follows these disasters and does not readily go away on its own. Many factors come into the equation to navigate the needs of your property when standing water exists. Choosing extraction equipment relates to the depth of the standing water, the materials exposed, the location of this damage, and the availability of power for the chosen equipment. Each of these factors can point our SERVPRO technicians to the appropriate extraction tools for the job.

In many cases, successfully removing all standing water from your property involves the use of more than one extracting tool or pump. Even in situations where we use powerful machines like the truck-mount or self-priming trash to remove standing water, the intake hoses for these machines are not rated to work well when the depth of pooling water drops under two inches. Once this occurs and there is a noteworthy decrease in constant water draw, other units must pick up the remaining water.

Smaller and more portable units such as our wet-vacs with extraction wands can help to remove water once the overall depth drops below this critical two-inch margin. Eliminating as much of the standing water as feasible helps later drying with air movers and dehumidifiers to become more effective and efficient, so we remove as much pooling water and excessive moisture as possible with our light wands.

Flooding can be a devastating situation for many area homes after a severe weather event, but our SERVPRO of Seattle Northeast team can help. We have multiple extraction units to help prepare your property for rapid drying solutions to follow. Give us a call at (206) 362-9295.

Some Seattle Water Damage Concerns Have Surprising Solutions

When water invades your Seattle home, you often hear it called a water loss. When our crew responds quickly with our professional water extraction and drying skills and equipment, we usually can prevent permanent damage to the walls, floors, ceilings, and other materials that make up the structure of your home. The plan we create and follow works well in most cases to avert the “loss” of your house itself.

The Impact of Water On Contents

With so much focus on the possible water damage to your Seattle house’s framework and interior, you might be afraid salvaging the contents usually sheltered inside falls entirely on you. We want you to know our training and skills also extend to the furnishings and personal possessions that make the bare bones of your abode a home.

Special Drying Options for Papers and Photographs

A frequent question we hear at SERVPRO is whether we can help with waterlogged books, journals, and photographs. Because of the advanced training our production facility technicians master, we have a range of resources to offer that can address specialized needs. We choose from among the following methods to limit the damage and dry documents and photos:

  • Air-drying
  • Dehumidification
  • Freezer drying
  • Vacuum freeze-drying
  • Vacuum thermal-drying

Help Us Help You

Before SERVPRO arrives, you can jump-start the process by moving wet documents and other paper-based items out of the water damaged area. Paper continues to absorb moisture as long as a source is available. Even the higher humidity in the water damage spaces can cause more significant water harm to your possessions. Jamming papers and pictures tightly together is not wise, but placing selected wet papers and pictures in the freezer can give your most treasured items the best chance for a successful outcome. Expect us to move the affected articles to our production facility or another space where we can assess and plan for the removal of the water.

Basics of Sublimation

SERVPRO frequently relies on the process of sublimation to rid paper and photos of water. Sublimation uses vacuum freeze-drying to change solid (frozen) water into a vapor that moves away from the impaired items. The intermediate step of melting into a liquid is skipped in the vacuum chamber, avoiding the additional deterioration liquid water could cause.

Walls and floors are repairable, but water loss to documents and other one-of-a-kind items needs innovative removal solutions. Have confidence that SERVPRO of Seattle Northeast has unique strategies for your precious possessions. Call (206) 362-9295 for a personalized evaluation.

Candle burning surrounded by Christmas Lights Be careful with your holiday decorations.

STOP!!! Can we get through Halloween first?? Sure, but the
holidays are right around the corner and will be here before we know it. We at SERVPRO want to give you
some Holiday Safety Tips so you make lasting memories with your family that do not include burning
your house down! According to National Fire Protection Assoctiation (NFPA), here are a few holiday
safety tips to remember;
? Dried flowers, cornstalks and crepe paper catch fire easily. Keep all decorations away from open
flames and other heat sources like light bulbs and heaters.
? Use a battery-operated candle or glow-stick in jack-o lanterns. If you use a real candle, use
extreme caution. Make sure children are watched at all times when candles are lit. When
lighting candles inside jack-o lanterns, use long, fireplace-style matches or a utility lighter. Be
sure to place lit pumpkins well away from anything that can burn and far enough out of the way
of trick-or-treaters, doorsteps, walkways and yards.
? Stay in the kitchen when you are cooking on the stovetop so you can keep an eye on the food.
? Keep matches and utility lighters out of the reach of children — up high in a locked cabinet.
? If deep frying your turkey, defrost the turkey COMPLETELY – and dry it before putting it in hot
? Keep a grease-rated fire extinguisher close by
? Use lights that have the label of a recognized testing laboratory. Some lights are only for indoor
or outdoor use.

? Never use lit candles to decorate the tree.
? Always turn off Christmas tree lights before leaving home or going to bed.
Bottom Line
Be safe this Holiday Season.

It’s that time of year when you can have leaks in your home from the constant downpours. It is imperative to get the leaks taken care of immediately. If not, mold will start to form which can cause more damage in the long run. Mold plays a critical part outside your home, by breaking down leaves and dead trees, but inside your home you should prevent mold growth at all cost. Mold may start growing inside your home when mold spores land on surfaces that are wet. Bathrooms are always damp and can be difficult to keep free of mold. In this case, running the fan, opening a window, or cleaning more frequently will help prevent mold from recurring or keep it to a minimum.

Bottom Line

Even a small amount of mold can spread throughout your home if not treated properly. If you are concerned about mold growing in your home, let’s get together to determine what steps you should take to get it removed.

The likelihood that you, your business, and your family will survive a house fire depends is high if you have working smoke detectors and an exit strategy. But…..what about your shoes, purses, jackets, linens, or that American Girl Doll has been in your family for decades. Too many times these sentimental items are thrown in the trash to never be seen again. The Esporta Wash System was produced to clean, disinfect, and restore sentimental and priceless articles that people have lost due to some sort of flood,

When the Power is Out, the Generator should Stay Out as well

3/12/2018 (Permalink)

Always place your generator Outside of the home for safety

When the lights start to flicker one's first instinct is to grab the flashlights to be ready if the power goes out.

There is a large number of homeowners and businesses that own generators that can keep the vital systems in a building running.

The generators, which run on gas, exhaust fumes very similar to your automobile.  Making sure these fumes don't come back into your home is extremely important.

Generators should be placed Outside in order to exhaust the fumes out into the open.  Even putting the generator int he garage is not safe practice, the generator should be outside of the home and venting away from any fresh air inlet.

When the power goes off and your property sustains property damage, call SERVPRO to do your repairs and mitigate the damage.

Faster Response

Since we are locally owned and operated, we are able to respond quicker with the right resources, which is extremely important. A fast response lessens the damage, limits further damage, and reduces the restoration cost.

Poorly Ventilated Attics encourage mold growth

3/12/2018 (Permalink)

Poorly Ventilated Attics encourage mold growth

The main cause of attic mold is improper ventilation. In cold climates, when homeowners heat their homes in winter, hot air usually escapes through the attic.

This occurs efficiently in attics with proper ventilation, but attic mold can occur if the hot air meets the cold surface of the attic roof and creates condensation.

If you see visible mold, do not disturb it. You can inadvertently spread the mold infestation throughout your home. When mold is disturbed, the mold can release microscopic mold spores which become airborne and can circulate inside your home.

What to Do:

  • Stay out of affected areas.
  • Turn off the HVAC system and fans.
  • Contact SERVPRO for mold remediation services.

What Not to Do:

  • Don’t touch or disturb the mold.
  • Don’t blow air across any surfaces with visible or suspected mold growth.
  • Don’t attempt to dry the area yourself.
  • Don’t spray bleach or other disinfectants on the mold.

With excessive crawl space moisture, mold will grow at a rapid pace. Crawl space mold can be damaging to your home's structure, your flooring, and anything else located in the area.

Mold survives on organic materials, such as wood, and when it's damp it provides the perfect environment for growth.

Keeping your HVAC system clean reduces the chance for mold to grow

3/12/2018 (Permalink)

Keeping your HVAC system clean reduces the chance for mold to grow

Mold in HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) systems can cause serious health problems. When the furnace or air conditioner is turned on,  microscopic mold spores can blow out of the air ducts and circulate through the air, where they are easily inhaled.

Keeping your Ducting and the Intake clean is vital to reducing the amount of contamination your HVAC system has.

If you see visible mold, do not disturb it. You can inadvertently spread the mold infestation throughout your home. When mold is disturbed, the mold can release microscopic mold spores which become airborne and can circulate inside your home.

Top 5 Culprits of roofing leaks in commercial buildings

3/9/2018 (Permalink)

Clogged drains are one of the top caused of roofing leaks

Sitting in the entryway of the Advertising firm's office in Downtown Seattle, John felt a light sprinkle hit his hand as he was checking his email.

"Maybe it was just in my mind" he said to himself as he brushed the feeling off as accident.  Then cam another drip....and another.....John looked to the ceiling to find one of the ceiling tiles with a ring of moisture.

There were strong winds and rain in the prior week but today was sunny and not a cloud in the sky.  It was obvious to John that something wasn't right so he contacted his building's maintenance manager and asked him to take a look.

The maintenance manager knew the water was coming from the roof , and that it was probably one of the 5 problems that normally cause water damages in commercial roofs.

Once the source was identified the work began to clean up the damaged building materials that the leak had caused.  Trying to do this while still keeping the office running meant calling SERVPRO to help mitigate the damage.

Do you know where your shutoffs are?

3/9/2018 (Permalink)

Knowing where your shutoffs are using shutoff tags

Knowing where your shutoffs are in your commercial building could save you thousands of unnecessary damage to your building.

Often times building owners will rely on the Fire Department to come in and shut off the water to the buildings once a loss has occurred.

Knowing where your shutoffs are and clearly marking them enables the building owner to shut off water several minutes before first responders can.

In the case of sprinklers that malfunction and turn on, just 1 minute less of water flowing could cut days off of a drying project.

If you don;t already , make sure you put together a plan of where the following shutoffs are:

  • Gas

  • Water

  • Electricity

Commercial buildings often times require elevated training and equipment to dry and repair.

Small toilet leaks can turn into Large issues with your home

Small toilet leaks can turn into Large issues with your home

We've all seen it, the first sign of a leaking toilet as we are cleaning the bathroom.  A slow drip in the supply line, leaking around the base of the toilet, or even condensation coming from a loose joint can cause water to affect a bathrooms floor.

If the leak continues it can cause damage to the subfloor and in some cases even the framing.

Routine inspections of your home's toilets can identify these leaks before they cause damage that  needs to be repaired.

If you do run into a repair that needs professional help give us a call!

February will finish as Seattle’s first drier-than-normal month since September

3/1/2018 (Permalink)

Clogged Drains + Heavy Rain = Water Damage

Looking back at the month of February, the wind and cold seemed to dominate the weather.  The Seattle Area experiences it’s first drier than normal month since September.

January, however, experienced much wetter-than-normal conditions as over 8 inches fell onto the roofs of Seattle.  The normal for the month of January is just shy of 6 inches.

The extra rain in January, coupled with winds, meant several building owners were performing inspections to make sure the drain vents weren’t clogged and holding water.

Several times throughout the year SERVPRO clients will call when a blockage on their roof suddenly clears and overflows into the building.

Always check your roof/gutters after a particularly windy storm to make sure your drainage system is running smoothly.

Floor Replacements can often be avoided with advanced floor drying technology

3/1/2018 (Permalink)

The right Technology and Training could save your floor

The kitchen lights turn on as you rub the sleep out of your eyes and stumble towards the coffee maker.  Two steps in you realize the smooth wooden floor you’ve walked across every morning for the last two years now feels different.

The smooth, dry floor you are accustomed to is now a cupped bundle of lumber that feels like it’s been soaked in the bathtub.  You quickly realize that the dishwasher you turned on as you went to bed the night before has been leaking water all over the kitchen.

The wood has begun to swell and buckle and your plans for a quiet Saturday morning reading the paper quickly turns into a call to SERVPRO for help.

For a lot of companies replacing a floor is the first choice to repair.  It seems like the quickest way in the moment, but there are weeks ahead of a compromised kitchen as replacement flooring is order.

There is a better choice though!  With skilled technicians and the latest in drying technology, SERVPRO can oftentimes dry the wood floor in place using a complex system of Dehumidifying Mats places on the floor and hooked up to a labyrinth of air hoses.

If you find yourself in this situation give SERVPRO a call, go ahead and make that coffee, we’ll be there soon to help get your life back to normal.

What's the deal with that Bathroom Fan?

3/1/2018 (Permalink)

A dirty Fan Vent reduces it's effectiveness

Bathroom fans are a unique part of your home’s overall health.  Oh sure, “getting that smell out” is one of the obvious benefits of the fan but it provides more than a clean smelling bathroom.

Did you know that a bathroom fan that’s used one hour a day will exhaust over 2,000,000 cubic feet of air a year, or the equivalent of the air inside 1,000 homes?

The moist air that is created when you take a shower or bath can combine with spores and all kinds of organic materials that are brought from the outside into your home.  This can increase the occurrence of microbial growth , which has shown to cause several health conditions.

Exhausting this moist are from the structure helps keep moisture levels low.  To be efficient , though, the vent on the fan should be cleaned and inspected on a regular basis to allow for proper air flow.

Turn the fan off at the switch or circuit breaker before removing the vent cover.

Remove the cover by pulling down until the cover is several inches from the ceiling. Press the spring loaded wire clips, found on two sides of the cover, together then remove the clips from the slots in the fan housing.

Use a vacuum to clean the vent of lint and debris.

Use an extension attachment to vacuum out the cavity of the fan.

The last step is simply replacing the vent cover and testing it out with a flip of a switch!

Sometimes your Kitchen just needs to Vent

3/1/2018 (Permalink)

Turning on your Kitchen Fan reduces Odor and Moisture

We’ve all been there, it seemed like a good idea to cook the bacon on High heat but that Text from a friend or the person that distracted us from our stove was enough to make it happen.

“It” is that smell that enters your nostrils that makes your hard race as you run to the stove and turn down the heat.  As you fan smoke away from the pan you realize you’re spreading this smoke into other parts of the kitchen.  You reach for the fan and turn it on for the first time in a while.

Cranking the knob up to high you look over at the smoke detector and the race is on.

“Will the fan suck up the smoke before it gets to the smoke detector and informs everyone in the house you’ve just burned the bacon?”

The Kitchen Fan is mostly a Reactive function in the kitchen.  It rarely gets turned on until smoke comes out of a pan or that pot of water starts to fog up the room.

The perfect time to turn on the fan is actually Before you turn on the stove and start cooking.  The main purpose of the fan is to eliminate heat and odors from the cooking that you’re doing.  The moisture and odors tend to stick to the walls of your kitchen.

The odors and moisture builds up and can turn your kitchen area into a feeding ground for microbial growth.

How do you reduce the chance for moisture and odor issues in your kitchen? Be proactive and turn the Fan on every time you turn the stove on.

If you ever do run into issues in your Home or Commercial building reach out to SERVPRO and we’ll come out and take care of you.

Commercial Cleaning for the Health of your Office Building

3/1/2018 (Permalink)

Cleaning of Hi Traffic surfaces for Building Health

Sitting in the waiting room at her Architect’s office, Jessica grabbed a magazine that was sitting on a table.  She read an article  the importance of cleaning “high traffic hard surfaces”  in commercial buildings.  The article showed several examples of hard surfaces that are commonly overlooked when commercial spaces are casually cleaned.

Door Knobs, Light Switches, Countertops, Equipment Controls, Chairs, Tables……….the list went on.

Jessica squirmed a little as she looked around the waiting area and imagined all of the people that had come before her who sat in her very seat.  “You can’t avoid germs altogether” she thought to herself, but still she wondered what steps an office took to make sure an acceptable level of cleanliness was maintained.

About that time David, one of the Firm’s Partners, came around the corner to great Jessica.  She asked David how his company kept the office clean as it looked like it was well maintained.

“Well, we really don’t have a regular cleaning company that comes in, we all just pitch in and Pam at the front desk handles everything out front.  We do, however, hire SERVPRO once a month to come in and do a deep clean of high traffic areas”.

Jessica nodded and smiled, “I think I’m going to have them help maintain this new Tenant Improvement Job you guys are working on, let’s go look at the updated plans for the project David”...

If you have a commercial space you’d like SERVPRO to come out and do a deep cleaning, feel free to contact us today!

New Cleaning Technology for SERVPRO of Seattle Northeast Customers

2/19/2018 (Permalink)

State of the Art Cleaning Technology for Soft Goods

When property damage occurs the initial focus is often on the larger pieces of someone’s life that was affected.  A roof, the kitchen floor, or the finished basement that needs to be repaired if the main focus of most involved.

When the dust of emotions and initial response settles the less noticeable pieces to someone’s life or business then presents itself.  The focus then moves to the “little things” in life that bring far more value than a dollar amount.

The blanket that your Aunt made.  The stuffed animal that your daughter won at the State Fair when she was 8.  Even those pair of shoes you bring out for special occasions, the ones they don’t even make anymore.  These are all items that sure, you could say are worth $9 for a stuffed animal, but honestly is there really an amount of money that can reimburse you for your emotional attachment?

At SERVPRO of Seattle Northeast we had seen several customers that went through the painful process of “being reimbursed” for their contents throughout the years.  We wondered if there was something we could do to improve the level of services that we were providing.  There was a definite need based on the feedback we had received.

In June SERVPRO of Seattle Northeast made the decision to invest in the Equipment and Training needed to provide state of the art soft contents cleaning in house.  SERVPRO of Seattle Northeast is now using the Industry leading Esporta System to clean soft goods contents to Food Grade levels.  This has resulted in less items thrown away, lower claims costs, and a better experience for our customers.

The cleaning technology we now have in house is capable of cleaning a variety of soft goods:

– winter boots

– hiking boots

– leather slippers

– suede coats

– leather coats

– suede handbags

– leather handbags

– suede or leather hats

– stuffed animals or dolls

– throw or bed pillows

– bedding

– curtains or drapes

Seattle Area Building Boom Necessitating Pre Planning for Emergencies Category

2/19/2018 (Permalink)

Seattle Area Construction boom is causing a need for Solid Planning

2017 was a big year for Residential and Commercial construction and there doesn't seem to be an end in sight!

Downtown Seattle alone experienced an additional 5,700 homes, almost 4 million square feet of office space, and 600+ hotel rooms.

Though these numbers are staggering, they are expected to rise by the time 2020 comes around.  In 2020 planners expect more than 17,000 homes to be built!

With the new square footage comes the challenges of making sure your Property Damage Emergency Services are pre planned Before an incident occurs.

SERVPRO of Seattle NorthEast works with Contractors, Building Owners, and Property Management Companies to set up Emergency Ready Plans.

This No Cost program gathers all of your important site/building information and makes it easily accessible if an event occurs.

This information is in physical form but is also available via Online (as well as our Free App) for your entire Team to access.  This information can be transferred from the General Contractor to the Property Management Team as the structures are commissioned.

If you would like more information on what an Emergency Ready Program would look like for your building or project, please contact us at 206-282-9500

Summertime Water Conservation Tips

7/5/2017 (Permalink)

Keep your plants happy and your water bill low with a few simple points.

With summer now in full swing, it's time to consider how to keep your lawn and garden it tip top shape while also considering how to keep your water bill down. Here are a few tips from Popular Mechanics on how (http://www.popularmechanics.com/home/lawn-garden/how-to/g559/9-water-conserving-tips-for-summer-gardening/):

  • Don't over water - a good rule of thumb is that a lawn needs 1 inch of water a week and perennial plants and shrubs will need from 1 inch to 2 inches a week. When in doubt, keep the plant's soil lightly moist and see how it responds. Over-watering is just as bad as under-watering; it leads to root rot and soil compaction that robs the roots of air.
  • Water in the morning - If you water while it's (relatively) cool outside, water can soak in before it evaporates on the surface. And if you do it in the morning, that helps the plant to take up the water during the day.
  • Don't waste water - Don't soak the plant's foliage; it does little good. If you see water puddling or running off, stop; let the water soak in before resuming. Likewise, water that runs off your lawn or off the top of a flower bed onto paved surfaces does no good. The same applies to running lawn sprinklers: Water your lawn, not the side of your house or the driveway.

Mold - Things You Need to Know

4/17/2017 (Permalink)

Control moisture and reduce your odds of mold - SERVPRO of Seattle Northeast can help!
  • There is no practical way to eliminate all mold and mold spores in the indoor environment; the way to control indoor mold growth is to control moisture.
  • If mold is a problem in your home or school, you must clean up the mold and eliminate sources of moisture.
  • Reduce indoor humidity (to 30-60%) to decrease mold growth by:
    • Venting bathrooms, dryers and other moisture-generating sources to the outside
    • Using air conditioners and de-humidifiers
    • Increasing ventilation
    • Using exhaust fans whenever cooking, dishwashing and cleaning
  • Molds can be found almost anywhere; they can grow on virtually any substance, providing moisture is present. There are molds that can grow on wood, paper, carpet, and foods.

Does Your Seattle Northeast Home Have A Mold Problem?

9/12/2016 (Permalink)

In Seattle Northeast, mold can spread through a home in as little as 48 hours.

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.
